My sticks are coming to life!

Carnegie, PA

My purpureofusca from the last Liddle order lost all of her leaves about a week after she got here. I didn't give up though. I had cut it into 3 different pieces and I kept it in the pot with soil and misted it faithfully whenever it got dry. Well, lo and behold, it's starting to come to life! It was growing a set of leaves but I was clumsy and ended up knocking one of them off *sniff*. But it's showing some good signs of wanting to survive. This is proof these little guys are very resilient.
How is everyone else's doing?

Not sure if you can see or not, but there are 2 new growth points here near the soil line.

I would say that for the most part my DL order is holding its own. I'm hoping that the warm summer weather in my greenhouse will spur them on. There are two or three that definitely did not make it, and the rest have rooted but pretty much just sit there. Last year's fall order was just so much better - much quicker rooting and great growth right from the start. The spring order was disappointing on so many levels that I would have to really ponder over whether I would participate in another one.

I have to agree with Doug...my DL cuttings are still sitting in their aquarium tank and have done very little...they've put out a few little roots, some of those have rotted (and the cuttings are in pure perlite, so I don't see how excessive moisture could be an issue) and then they put out a couple more little roots...nobody has progressed to the point where I feel I can transfer them to my regular potting mix and everybody seems to be struggling...Honestly, I probably would not take part in another DL order either...I just think the risk is too great and the process is too hard on the plants...But good for you Jen! I hope your plants make it and do well--they're certainly way ahead of my guys..

Sorry to hear your hoya are doing so poorly. The plants from the fall order really did exceed my expectations. They all rooted quickly and started putting on new growth not too long after. These have definitely struggled but I think are finally stabilized. I lost hellwigiana and pentapheblia and this is the second pink heuschkeliana that I've lost. I got one in the fall order and it died a few months later. I can't understand what the problem is with this particular plant. The yellow version has done superbly for me.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for your plants.

Starting a new thread with a question....this is good "meal for the griststone".

Good job, Jen. I tried to revive an H. imperialis from a bare stem, but it didn't work. It put out lot of rootlets, but the stem itself slowly rotted, even thought it was sitting on top of perlite and kept rather dry.

I only ordered 6 cuttings in the Spring DL order. This was the first try with me at rooting hoyas. I ordered: H. acuta, citrina, magnifica, memoria, pimenteliana (cagayanensis) and pubicalyx royal hawaiian purple. The cagayanensis was dead on arrival ... no hope of saving it. The others are doing real well.

Here's a picture I just went out and took,it's dark outside so this is not the greatest photo.

This is 3 of them:

Whoops - look like I should have posted to this one instead of the other thread....

I'm with Doug and Shelley - don't know if I'll do another DL order. I really hope the whole experience was just one bad fluke, but my cuttings looked nothing like pictures I've previously seen of DL cuttings - condition or size (a couple were a decent size).

I got cuttings from Ted Green last fall - granted they were more expensive, but they were all extremely healthly and are doing well!
Bought my very first cuttings last fall from Ric and those are doing great! (Thanks, Ric!) Every other cutting I received this past spring are doing well!

Just don't know....

Stick with what you are comfortable with, Kelly. I think that part of the DL order is getting hoyas from him...and many of the hoyas are available from other sources. I have had mixed luck....

Carol-

Australis "Lisa" has already rooted! Woo Hoo! That's without a doubt going to be a top 10 favorite! Fusca is working on new set of leaves #2 and #3 - feel certain this ones going to be another top 10! Have my short list ready to go for July!

We need a new thread of top ten favorites along with reason it made the top 10!

You're right - with so many sources it's not like there aren't options!

By the way - glad to see you posting and reading that all went well!

Kelly
