Do I have to wait till it's ALL brown?

Dalton, GA(Zone 7a)

It's been at least 6 wks. since my daffs finished blooming yet most of the foliage is still green. Looks terrible tho (laying flat on the ground mostly) and I'm soooo ready to cut it all off! Must I wait until it's all brown?

Impatiently,

8 weeks is recommended--but if its absolutely flat on the ground its OK, but I always wait 8 weeks after last bloom myself.

Thank you!! I think I can stand it another 2 wks. (or at least 1) since I know there's light at the end of the tunnel and I'm close!

Me too for eight weeks. Daffs are something I either seed a spring/early summer something in front of or plop in a dahlia cuz I get tried of looking at the foliage.

LOL firstyard - I got tired of looking at mine too and finally chopped it even though it is still kind of green. I agree with dmj on the 8 weeks and that is the rule of thumb I go by.

When we are all together and sit on the dinner table with each of us having a full rack of babyback ribs, I'll go by and take your plate away when there are still 3 ribs left and see how you would feel.

that's what those poor daffodils feel like when you cut off the green leaves. It will be the difference between a GREAT show next year and a mediocre one.

As far as looking kind of pityful for a few weeks, you should see me when I come back from the garden after a days work. Nothing spectacular to look at, but wait and see when I've done my cleaning up!!

Bad boys.

You could put rubber bands around the most pathetic looking ones.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I tie them to a stake with pantyhose to hide them behind the dahlias or annuals.

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

LOL, burt! Great analogy. Makes ya feel bad for the poor daffs, eh?

Dalton, GA(Zone 7a)

dahlianut, I like your idea. Guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and move all my bulbs so that they have something in front of them.

I also need to hide the iris and the flowering quinceshrubs. Geez, sometimes I feel like I'm trying to hide half my garden!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Why do you have to hide the iris fristyard? Foliage stays green, upright and spikey here. Great foliage in the back of a border or center of a bed here. Does it brown in the heat in GA?

Dalton, GA(Zone 7a)

Yes, lots of brown - really ratty looking. Altho there may be things I could do to make them look better. But someone on another forum suggested hiding them behind other plants.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

ok that's not good but I bet there's alot of kick butt tropicals or tender bulbs that you could put in front of them. I personally luv acidenthera and ismene for a bulb choice for later in the season which should luv your zone and should hide them or would they burn too? WOW the different challenges we have in different climes is amazing!
