I have house finches and lesser gold finches. The house finches have started drinking from the hummingbird feeders. They still eat the nyger from the finch feeders also. I have had both types of feeders up for a couple of years but this is the first year they seem really into the "nectar" feeders. The lesser goldfinches stick to the nyger only. Is this unusual behavior? I do have 2 bird baths also so it is not for lack of water.
Why are the finches drinking the hummingbird food?
Because they're greedy, I guess!

Most of my birds love sugar water. I have seen cardinals trying to drink from the feeders. Probably if you put out saucers, lots of birds would drink the sugar water. Butterflies, too. Nearly all birds like everything. Hummers eat bugs. Most of our birds eat the Orioles' jelly and oranges. Etc. Fun, huh??
The same reason squirrels are doing so in my backyard... Because they can!
If I've picked up the little white surrounds of the ports on my h-bird feeders once this summer I've picked them up 100 times.
Why those furry (cuss word)'s can't drink the goo WITHOUT ripping those things off I don't know.
Thank you. I could not figure out what non-humming bird was at the nectar feeder this morning. It was smaller than a sparrow but larger than a hummingbird. I did not have my glasses on and could only tell that it was not colored yellow or orange (like an oriole) and had a dark band around its head. I have been searching for such a bird online and just now saw this. It was the size of a finch. A true hummingbird was there a few minutes later and acted like a detective, but finally drank. Thanks again. Carol
