First vegi garden question

I was thinking about putting 3-4 inches of straw over the entire garden. I would just separate the straw to plant the seeds. What is your opinion?

Straw should make a great mulch. But some seeds may want direct sun and warmth to begin with. Then you could dress the plants with the straw.

I use the technique and it works fine.

My experience has been that 3-4 inches may be a little too deep to begin with for seeds. I have had luck with using a thin layer to start and then adding to the layer as the seeds germinate and grow. That think layer should be ok for transplants though

Another option would be to use your 4 inch layer but fill your planting hole in the straw with a planting mix and plant your seeds into that rather than the dirt at the level of the bottom level of the mulch.
