how to stop the grasshoppers?

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Once again this year the grasshoppers are starting to defoliate my rose bushes and hibiscus. Is there anything I can spray that can deter these critters? Nontoxic is preferred but at this point I might try about anything.

Thanks, Kim

Kim, I think I'm going to have the same issue this year. I've noticed thousands of nymphs when I walk through the yard. I spread nolo bait last week. They should still be in the nymph stage (1/4") to be effective. I have my doubts about it working. I was looking on the ground to see if I could see them eating the bait and instead found out I was feeding the ants. They may have carried away all the bait.grrr

I did find this site that has different homemade approaches. I'm going to try a few myself. Good luck, get'em! http://www.ghorganics.com/page12.html

Guinea hens or chickens work well, but you probably can't keep them if you're within city limits.

Yea...birds like that aren't an option where I live...my apt already looks like a zoo with my two cats and dog..lol. Maybe I need to train my dog to eat grasshoppers? LOL....he eats everything else he finds.

The cats would have fun chasing them!! LOL Free entertainment and exercise for them! ^_^

Ok...I thought the damage was from grasshoppers but now I am not sure...'it' ate my persian shield almost to the ground, my rudbeckia leaves off, and is now driving me crazy. I am thinking unfortunately that a spray is not going to cut it. 'It' is making me want to scream!!!
