I was reading something on the internet about a strep potting mix with egg shells in it.What would the benefits be for adding egg shells? Anyone know?
3 parts peat
3 parts perlite
1 part vermiculite
Add 2-3 tablespoons of crushed egg shell to each quart of mix.
Saw this Strep potting mix
G'morning. Egg shells are a source of calcium and magnesium. Not much, but the plants don't need much. Definitely an alternative to supplementing via a commercial Cal-Mag solution.
Yep, for the calcium and magnesium ... that's the only thing I can think of for using egg shells. I've never used them for an additive to potting mix myself. But, then again I've never had any luck with Strep's!
I wash and rinse egg shells and crush them up for the birds!
Keyring, don't the trace elements in our fertilizer provide the calcium and magnesium that the plants need? Outside I use epsom salts but nothing extra on the inside gessies.
I just repotted some plants that I bought from someone and wondered what all that eggshell was doing at the base of the pot? That lady lives here.
Thanks for the info Ki. I think I might just add some eggs shells into the soil.
