grow bags

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

any of you ever use the plastic green grow bags?.... I bought some last year and filled three.... they said to leaving it laying down until the roots get established.... yesterday afternoon I went to check on my seedlings to see who needed water and when I touched the bag it was burning hot.... i stood them upright and opened the tops.... but are these things going to just fry the plants in the hot weather?

I've heard of them, but never used them.
I hope someone has some experience with these and can post.

I am wondering if the heat build up was just because they were laying down & had no ventilation.... going to check them today with the tops open

I just tried them this spring. When I attempted to lay them flat as instructed, the potting soil would tumble out, so I just went ahead and hung them, hoping for the best. I figured they'd get pretty hot in the sun and opted to put portulaca (moss rose) as my choice and they seem to be doing fine. Maybe you need to keep them in a shady spot? Mine get afternoon sun and are protected so as not to get too much water.

I've used them in the past - gave up on them since they need to be watered so often. But they do better if laid flat until the roots start growing. I used to do it for a week to ten days. I would leave them where they would get AM sun only.

thanks for the advice.....well one has only trailing coleus so that won't be a problem with shade... as well as the pansy... but the petunias..... going to have to find a spot that's not an afternoon sun spot
