I couldn't resist posting these pictures. This one is of one of our Sebright hens.
Pics of chicks. couldn't resist
So pretty!
they are all so lovely! i think Charcoal is a hen...
TF, what makes you think she is a hen? How do you tell the difference? We have 6 Silkies and I can't tell what any of them are.
ask SilkieChick to be sure. but i have looked at so many pics, esp of silkies, that she just LOOKS like one. the rump, the poof on her head, the lack of walnut comb or waddles... i guess if she starts crowing, you can just sue me LOL
LOL, no I won't sue you. I have been able to tell pretty much between roos and hens on the other chicks we have but these are a mystery to me. Some of them look a little more henny in the face, but I've never had silkies and I don't know what to really look for. They are almost 11 weeks old.
Most of our roos have crowed except the Birchen Cochins (also 11 wks) and the Golden Phoenix (8wks old) and of course the Silkies.
Even our Blue Cochin roo is crowing (8 wks old) I call him squeakers. He sounds like a dog toy that gets stepped on, and he is about the size of a dog toy, too cute.
Does look like a hen, but with silkies you could get surprised! I think hen because of the shape of the puffball on the head. Does it walk on tippy toes or have little feathers streaming of the back of it's crest? Sometimes it's tough to tell them apart. I had a black silkie I thought was a hen until it crowed one day. It didn't really develope the streamers until AFTER it crowed, lol!
Haven't noticed it walking on its tippy toes and no streaming feathers....so far. It is darker in color than most of the rest, hence the name Charcoal. It was darker from the start. Most are lighter grey in color, one other is darker but not as dark as this one I don't think. Don't know if color shade means anything or not.
At what age did yours start crowing?
smedgekles what breed is that first chick? It's beautiful!

I can't recall. I think anywhere from 4-5 months. It looks very henish to me.
MollyD it is a Silver Sebright hen. She is a beauty isn't she. We have two hens. The one in the picture is Kimmy.
Patch, I'll be listening for crows when they reach that age. I'm hoping we have mostly hens and one roo so we can keep the breed together and raise any possible hatching eggs as full bred. Right now since they are still young we have a mixed pen, but my husband is working on splitting them into pens by breed.
Beautiful. Shame it only comes bantam size.

The Wyandotte was originally called the "American Sebright" because the Silver-Laced variety has a similar plumage color. So you need one!
Molly's been watning Wyandoottes for quite some time, soundlike a perfect excuse!
It sure does but it may have to wait till next year LOL I'm getting the Welsummers and the Buttercups in June so I'm running out of excuses on why I need more chicks.
I will have to put Silver Laced Wyandottes on my list of must have along with some Ancona Ducks ^_^
