Now whats going on with my tomatoes???

Maggie Valley, NC

OK... so I had a look at my tomatoes today (its been a couple days) and I saw they have some sort of white spots on th leaves and stems and some leaves are turning brown...

I have attached a pic.

What the heck is it and can I do anything?

Thanks in advance,

Luke

Luke-

I don't know if your weather has been as weird as it has been here, but my tomatoes that I started from seed got wiped out by the torrential rain and no sun for over a week. Today, I put in some plants I bought- they're bigger, so hopefully they'll make it, but I think we'll need a few days of good sun to tell.

If the root system is strong on your plants, they'll probably be ok- all you can really do now is wait and see.

Hope you'll have good luck. I have planned on a LOT of tomatoes (my single favorite food)-so I'll do whatever I have to do!

Suzan might be right. It looks like it could be a fungus. Mold or mildew. Be sure to remove the affected leaf.

My daughter thinks I am crazy, but when I see a leaf I don't like on a plant I take it off. Whatever is wrong with it could affect the rest of the plant.

One quick question. You didn't fertilize with a folier spray that could have settled on it did you? That could look like that and burn the leaf (brown) too.

Hmmmm...

Problem is its all over the plant. So if I remove the affected parts I might as well chop it off at the ground....lol

I did use some MG a few days ago... I don't recall pouring it all over the plant though... I guess I will wait and see...

I doubt MG would be white. There must be someone out there that should know. It is a long weekend so they probably won't be on until tonight or tomorrow.

Looks like Powdery mildew to me, but I won't say for sure as I am more used to seeing it on Pumpkins and Zucchini plants at the end of the season. Have you been experiencing unusually cool or unusually warm conditions combined with high humidity? Many of these fungi are opportunistic and will attack any plant which is feeling a bit under par for any reason. Is this plant growing as well as your others? If not, it may be sickly anyway and you might be better off tossing the plant and replacing it while the season is still early enough to do so. A lot of these fungal things can spread fast if the conditions suit them so if I were you I would want a definitive answer quickly. Do you have a local agricultural office or something of the sort where you could take a sample leaf and get a diagnosis?

Best of Luck, KK.

I agree with Kaelkitty, that looks like Powdery mildew to me also. Are your plants getting plenty of air flow? I'm pretty sure there is a spray for Powdery mildew.

If you have plenty of plants I would get rid of it. That is if it is the only that has it.

No, they all have/had it... it appears to have gone away now but the plants overall just aren't doing so well.

No worries really as I have plants in the planter as well...

The squash and zuch on the other hand look great...lol

Ok Truckalter, if they are done with it, get a bottle of that liquid Miracle Grow that Kent says he uses and give them a good dose. The stuff you put on the hose and folier spray them. Try that. Ask Kent, but I think you should probably spray the bales with it if you have enough.

truckalter: I 2nd the motion from Jeanette to give your bale tomatoes a dose of MG or some manure tea, etc.

They probably just need a vitamin boost for a couple days.

I gave them some MG so we will see....
