Hummingbird Island
Oh man, when your wife isn't lookin dig them all up and put them some place else lol!
Meredith.....What you fail to understand, and I understand why you don't understand as you are married to who you are married to and I am married to....well you get my drift.....:)
You see Meredith if my wife caught me doing that, she would dig a hole, a big one I might add, and put you know who right in it......Are we clear about this now Meredith?........:)
Paul from Alabama
lol! Very clear.
ROFLMAO -
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I will never again complain that my husband does not "share" my hobby!
Paul - Too funny! Hmmm ... Your description of your wife sounds a little like me! LOL! Luckily, my husband doesn't share my love of gardening! Whew! He's safe from any large holes in the backyard!
That was just too funny! Thanks for the laugh!
Meredith....the clarity between me and you is in a word, ASTOUNDING.....:)
Jo_in_Tx.... And I will never complain again period, cause my wife told me if I did she'd.....Ah never mind......:)
Becky....The reason, and it's only one reason of many, that I'm safe from any big holes is I fill'em up right after my wife starts digging them......Works out very well for both of us....She gets good exercise digging the hole and I get saved from being buried alive by filling them right back up......See how it all works out when there's love and understanding on both sides?.......:)

I see you have a mutual appreciate and respect for each other! :-D
BTW - Your garden and entire yard is lovely! I used to have lots of grass, now it is lots of garden beds. My kids are slackers about mowing, so figured I'd solve the problem myself by slowly adding garden beds all over my yard with paths and patio seating areas to cover the overgrown lawn areas! It seems to be working! LOL!
Here is my Hummingbird garden bed. The pole that the basket is hanging from is my hummingbird feeder pole. But the Ruby-throats have all flown north for the summer. The basket comes down in the Fall and the feeder goes back up throughout the winter & Spring! Many of the nectar plants for them are out of bloom during the warmer months as well. But other plants bloom in their place until Fall & Winter comes again.

Paul...
Fantastic story!!! Loved it!!! Although with all the overgrowth in my yard (I can't bear to prune back) I think I do have gorillas! (okay, healthy 'possums)
Dare I mention I also read most of the other stories too? Loved 'em all!!! I enjoy your style of writing. You're my hero sans the expensive book and gift certificate!!! :o)
Oh, and will say I've caused many a Bear Jam - I often stop to take photos of plants and such...mainly wildflowers along the side of the road I can't identify.
However, I'll take your Bear Jam and call it a Zebra Jam - as there's a ranch out here that has zebras (zerbice? ROLF!) and most unsuspecting folks driving through our part of the woods (scratch that...we're always suffering from a drought so make that...driving through our part of barren land) can't believe there's zebra in southern Texas so they have to stop and take photos.

beckygardener.....I decided a long time ago to cover my yard with flowers instead of kids........:)
and seriously now, thanks, so glad you enjoyed the pictures.....
And finally and in conclusion......I loved your little hummingbird bed....especially the peachy colored flower in the foreground and I liked whatever that variegated thingie up near the wall was....and I reckon you got the sound of water I see, I reckon nothing in the whole wide world brings birds a running like the sound of water, rushing, dripping waterever....
~ Cat =^..^=, may I call you Cat?...thanks, Cat.....Cat, you expect me to believe that there's zebras in Texas!!!...Cat, I was born at night sure, but NOT last night.......:)
I suppose Tarzan lives in Dallas now.......:)
but no joke, thanks so very much, so glad you enjoyed all the stories and I can't begin to tell you how tickled that makes me....sharing laughs and giggles along with plants and knowledge, well if that ain't the good life, I don't know what is.....
Paul from Alabama
Paul,
Funny you should mention you suppose Tarzan lives in Dallas...actually Ron Ely who played Tarzan back in the 60's was born in Hereford, Texas :o)
(Rut roh...did I just carbon date my butt?)
We also have a town called Tarzan in Texas :o)
Went back to read more stories...I'm hooked!!! You've got a wonderful sense of humor.
Aside from zebras some people farm giant sunflowers as far as the eye can see!!!
~ Cat
TexasPuddyPrint......I don't even want to know how you came up with that nickname and don't tell me, at least not in public.....:)
Ron Ely is from Hereford, Texas....and Johnny Weissmiller, the real Tarzan, I guess he's from Laredo!!!!.......:)
and that fact that Texas has a town called Tarzan is really no big deal or surprise to me, to give names to all the towns that can fit in Texas as big as it is, there's bound to be ONE named Tarzan......:)
and ~ Cat.....thank you for the nice comment about my sense of humor and your reading more of the stories, that's the nicest thing you could say to me.....No joke, no lol

LOL! Love your stories Paul. I just had to bookmark your site so I can keep up with them. I think your hummer island is beautiful. You don't reckon your better half would settle for a piece of yard to call her own where she could plant anything/everything her little heart desires? Maybe get a little competition going with her to see who can come up with the most classy looking garden. I'm with some of the others here--sure glad hubby doesn't get into the gardening stuff. He'll dig the occasional hole for me if I'm putting in a large tree (we have hard clay and it digs real hard) but other than that, I'm on my own, thank the good Lord!
Paul, Your stories are just too funny! That is my favorite picture of your back yard. It looks like you manicure the lawn with a pair of scissors! By the way, I looked everywhere in the garage for my spouting terracotta fish, after seeing yours in your water feature. It was nowhere to be found.
NatureLover.....So glad you enjoyed the stories, I can tell you I have a big time writing them......and I hope you laugh yourself plum silly at any I conjure up in the future.....and again thanks....
Now NatureLover I see exactly what you mean, I give her part of the yard she calls her own where she plants anything and everything her heart desires and then that leaves me with my part of the garden where she does the same thing as she does on her own part....Gee NatureLover, brilliant idea, I see my wife and you are in cahoots again.......:)
Paul from Alabama
LOL Paul--no, I'm not in cahoots with your wife. But, if she's that type, I do see your point. You'd have a ball in "my" yard. I have 11 1/2 acres, 5 1/2 of which is all mine to play with and plant whatever I want. The rest we left in woods for all the critters (deer, coons, red fox, turtles, etc.). I sure do see how lucky I am my hubby isn't interested in playing in the dirt. This way, I get to make ALL the choices and I'm sure having lots of fun doing it. We built our house ourselves four years ago and I started with the entire 5 1/2 acres of yard in pure dirt--no grass, just nothing. I've planted somewhere around a hundred trees and I didn't even try to count the shrubs and flowers.
NatureLover....by nature (sorry to borrow part of your name, will give it back after I post this...:))...by nature I'm not the jealous type, but after reading about your setup where you live I seem to be in a real 'coveting' mood......:).....No joke, I just love the notion of planting all the trees from scratch, no grass start, leaving some for the critters....You did it up right, I know you'll do yourself proud.....You got a special opportunity, so glad you're going to make the best of it......And me? I got to run outside right quick, I see my wife's got the shovel......:)
Paul from Alabama
paul, just love your story. you can send any plants you don't want to me! LOL
kathy
kathy....I don't have a darn thing to send you, wait a minute, Oh OK, I just found 23 plants that were on sale this weekend at a nursery near me.....Let me send them to you before my wife gets up.....:)
and thanks for writing and so glad you enjoyed the story.......
Paul from Alabalma
don't want your wife mad at me. remember we don't live that far apart. she might hunt me down. LOL
