Chickens killing flowers

Rougemont, NC

Does anyone have any hints for how to keep chickens from destroying flowers? they pull some up by the roots, peck others to death? is there something organic
I can put on plants that chickens don't like? thanks.

What a great idea. Poultry repellent! I sure could have used some before my pullets ate the beans, and the peas and the swiss chard. I think I am just going to have to cage the veggies while the chickens are out:0(

tabasco sauce? most people just don't have chickens AND flowers, though it is hard to choose...

Since I had to fence a small yard for my dog and cats some time ago, now that I don't have the dog, I plant my flowers inside the yard. With the cat out (they don't know there is no top to the fence so they can't get out) the chicks stay out of the yard, so I have no trouble.

The wind blew open the chicken yard gate today while I was at work and the pullets found my new swiss chard plants! This means war! Well actually it means I will spend tomorrow making cages for the raised beds. The chickens always win......

here too! i let them eat the grubs as they came up in my raised bed. now it is all planted and closed in. actually it is only the new hens that i didn't raise who seem to not have any garden manners LOL, and one had a special liking for lemon balm!

Don't try Tobasco. It has too much salt and vinigar and kils the plants. (learned that the hard way) I have a neighbor with boarded horses that eat everything within three feet of the fencing, I grew a bunch of habinero peprs last summer and froze them. This year I put them in the blender with some veggie oil and water an hit on. Strain the whole thing and spray on plants and trees and anyhing else you want animals to stay away from. It works well, but I'm not sure about on birds. I know they put hot pepper powder in birdseed to keep out squirrels and it doesn't affect birds. (though it is harmful to their resperatory systems and eyes)

I think I'll try to dose soemthing like a piece of bread with my hot pepper spray and toss it in the chicken coop to see if it works.

come to think of it, not uncommon to give chickens hot pepper for different reasons....

And that's why they call those very small, incredibly hot, pequin peppers "bird peppers". They ate all of mine before I could harvest them last year:0(

Catscan when I read your response I started laughing! It was all playing out in my head....! Anyway I love flowers and I wanted to start doing my yard as an old cottage still garden and those gardens have a lot of flowers. So im hoping that they will have such a wide range they wont eat them all, then again I just might be kidding myself. Anyway Im going to try it. Ill just have to get plants on clearance so if this does happen i wont want to go get my money back out of the chickens lol.

I am learning too so no help here.

other than fencing the vegetables IN and the chickens OUT, nothing will prevent our feathered friends from helping themselves!

Well, if anyone were to go back to some earlier posts on any of these threads, they would see a different style of writing. I pay attention to detail, and notice the way everyone writes. Your writing changes from time to time. For example, (at the risk of sounding a bit rude, and I apologize), sometimes it appears that you are not a very good speller and/or typer. Then, out of the blue, you will put a post in like the one above, where your writing is without mistake, and does appear to be written by an adult. I have to admit that most of the time, by the way you write and respond, that you appear to be a much younger person, like a child. No offense, anyone can go back to most of your previous posts and see what I mean. That's why I asked the question, I thought maybe you and a child might be sharing the same name. I swear it's like Jekyll and Hyde sometimes, lol!
