Windy Day at the Shore

Marlton, NJ

Went down the shore and managed to get a few birds. Weather was challenging with 30mph winds and higher gusts.

First up is a Mute Swan. 3 pics

Ospreys are next. Heres is one who had caught a fish and chased a seagull off his perch.

LOL, thanks Resin. Do you know about that seagull?

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

It's an immature (first-summer) Herring Gull

Great shots Pelle! Looks like a fun day (except for the wind)! I love that one of the Osprey on the perch with the fish...looks like he is looking right at you! Those swans are beauties as well..I haven't seen a swan in real life since I was a kid (about 100 years ago)! Are any of these first timers for you?

Marlton, NJ

Thanks Rose. The Dunlin and Willet are new ones for me.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Congratulations on the great shots as well as the new ones!!

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Wonderful pictures Pelle. Osprey shots are awesome.

Cool pics Pelle.

That Osprey's fish breaks the "Never eat anything bigger than you head" rule. lol

Nice close swan pics.

That Osprey is wild looking!

Thanks guys!

Great shots, Pelle. It's probably easier for the Osprey to catch a big fish as long as they can carry it back to land.

Way to go with the Dunlin & Willet. My problem with shorebirds is that I can't tell the difference between a Willet or a Won'tet, or any other one !!!

Brainerd, MN

Nice shots!!

Melbourne, FL

Very nice Pell. Ospreys are interesting to watch.

Marlton, NJ

Thanks GP! We also saw a Comorant in flight along w/ some others in flight.

When we were sitting on the porch at my sisters that night we heard a

Chuck-wills widow repeatedly calling out. Pretty neat!

Wonderful images and great photography, pelletory. A pair of Ospreys has been nesting in a Norfolk Island Pine opposite the beach at Cottesloe (West Australian coast) for several years. I took this image at Cottesloe last month. I was heading home from work this afternoon and stopped to look at one of them hovering very close to shore, only a couple of hundred metres south of where this shot was taken. A wonderful way to unwind following a hectic day at work. I was paddling on the Swan River a couple of days ago and an Osprey casually flew overhead. With two bottlenose dolphins in front of me and an Osprey overhead on a river I had to myself, it was a magic moment.

The mute swans are just beautiful. Do you see many?

That would be a magical moment Margaret!

Down the shore they (Mute Swans) are in good numbers.

PERTH, Australia

Hi, pell. What's happening in your neck of the woods?

Marlton, NJ

Hi Margaret, Not too much except I watched a cool mobbing scene yesterday between a Red-tailed Hawk and a mob of Blue Jays and Grackles. It wound up with the Hawk being in a large pine type tree. The noise from the commotion was so loud it was bringing people out of their houses and I could hear kids yelling "Its a Hawk". It lasted a very long time but I was unable to get a shot with my camera.
Right now we're having severe thunderstorms so no bird watching today. :-)

PERTH, Australia

Wow, what a sight to behold! I can imagine the racket.

We had a day full of thunderstorms yesterday with lots of wonderful accompanying rain.Considerable damage about 300 kilometres south of Perth. It was frustrating because I had to time my access to the internet between breaks in the storms. Scary stuff.

PERTH, Australia

Hello pelletory, what's happening with your mute swans? I just had another look at the images at the beginning of the thread. They are so beautiful. Has the Red tailed hawk been back to cause consternation in the neighbourhood? What type of fish does the Osprey have? It looks like what we call a Tailor. I think they're called bluefish in the US.

Marlton, NJ

Hi Margaret, The swan and Osprey pics were taken down the shore. I live quite a ways inland so I don't get down as often as I would like.

The Red-tailed Hawk pics are taken at my house in Marlton and I see them along with the Turkey Vultures many times a day. So far their behaving themselves. :-)

Hopefully I'll get down the shore again soon.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Nice captures pelle, the Ospreys must have been exciting to watch!

PERTH, Australia

Turkey Vultures - cool. I'd love to be able to tell someone that I had Turkey Vultures in my yard!
