My First Little Pond

New Orleans, LA(Zone 9a)

My boyfriend & I finally finished our little pond. It's in a 50 gallon rubbermade container that means a lot to me. It belonged to my Dad who passed away last year. He & I often spoke about turning it into a little pond at his home, but with Katrina & everything we never got around to it. I think he'd be proud of what I've done.

I'd like to thank all of you for your very kind words. My Dad was a real nature lover and always had a large vegetable garden and a separate flower garden. He also loved to fish so maybe he would have liked my few little goldfishes!!

Jo,
I had 7 little goldfish, about 2" each. I called them the seven dwarfs. Now they are the seven dwarfs minus one. I know that's a lot for this small pond, but I guess a few more will go onto fish heaven before they get to a larger size. If not, I have a friend with a larger pond who will take any that get too large. They are getting adjusted tome feeding them & not hiding when I walk up to the pond.

I just love your pond. Do you think the fish will survive the heat in the summer? That's my concern with a small pond. And which 50 gallon container did you use?

Jo,
I used a rubbermaid stock tank that is 52"x31"x12" deep.

My pond is only a few weeks old,so I can't say how hot t will get in the New Orleans heat. About half of the surface gets no sunlight, and the other half gets suns only in the afternoon. I now have a lot of plants in the water & hopefully that will helpd keep the water a little cooler.

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

Since the sides of the tank are sheltered from the sun that also helps to moderate temperatures. I vacationed once in New Orleans ( pre Katrina) and found it to be an amazing place and a place where we put the convertible top up to get away from the heat.

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

I think since you have the water circulating with the waterfall, the temp.will probably be okay.

That is just lovely! You'd never guess it was a preformed container. Looks very natural with the great rock work you did. Lots of plants in the pond to uptake nutrients out of the water will help a lot with having a large fish load in the pond. You can also do weekly small water changes if needed. With that much shade, and if you have lots of plants on the sunny side to shade the water the temp should stay in a safe range. You can always freeze water in butter or cool whip bowls and float them in the water during the heat of the day to help cool the pond if it gets too warm.

Lana,
Thanks for your advice. I love the idea of a block of ice to help cool things down in the heat of the day. I must have a small leak by the waterfall, requrring me to add at least 5 gallons (10%) of water per week. It will probably get worse once the real smmmer hits and temps stay in the high 90s. I think I'm going to add even more underwater plants to help out. I seems to be getting some sort of algae on the waterfall. Not too bad yet, but I'll keep an eye on it.

BTW, if I have too mny typos in this, blame it on the margaritas!!

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

mmmm, margaritas! Love em :)

No rubber showing! Love and landscaping you did around it.
