They said it was a tropical plant, but didn't have a name. I thought it was the cutest thing, looks like a little white hat with a red flower attached at the end.
Anyone know what it is?
Thanks!

In your zone, that would be necessary. Be right back. There is another thread running that will show you just how big it can get.

This is on Tropical Zone Gardening. It is pretty long. The bleeding heart pictures are near the bottom of the thread. Scroll down. Absolutely unbelievable.
OMG, what did I buy?? LOL
Where on earth am I going to put THAT?? I have it in a 12" hanging basket. I might need to rethink that, huh?

kitty, I bought one in a hanging basket last year. Put it in the ground late summer.
It just sat there and did nothing. I mulched it real good. Has come back from the root but is only about 10". It is a tropical and will not get very big here because it will always die down to the ground. I may put it in a big pot so I can take it in this winter. Our ground does not freeze so that makes it "root hardy" as are bananas and elephant ears. But every year they have to start over. I am in a suburb of Dallas and two zones warmer than you are.

Susan, I don't think you need to worry that much, if you lived in a nice climate where you can plant it in the ground and keep it outside year round it can get really big, but kept in a pot and brought in for the winter you can keep it a much more manageable size.
I started out with a cutting, put in in a pot, outgrew that, so, put it in a bigger pot, outgrew that, now it's in the ground under an oak tree climbing up the trunk. That was last year. I didn't cover it over the winter and it still grew. Two days ago I cut it way back and took clippings and am soaking them now. today the plant is blooming. I call it the red butterfly flower. Beautiful but it can get out of hand.
I planted one about 3 moths ago. is it too early to cut it back? It isn't filling out. I put it on a trellis. thanks.
If it is growing up but not filling out I would think it would be ok to cut it back to encourage fullness. I also used some granular slow release fertilizer like ozmocote at the base which seems to work wonders.
