How much pollen needed to pollinate?

Houma, LA

I am new at pollinating my hibiscus. I have a few noid tropical hibiscus that have been open pollinated and have a few seed pods on them. Since I see they are "willing" parents I would like to try hand pollinating but how much pollen should I use?

Hi Dorothy, I usually use a Q-tip swab to gather the pollen, then I just lightly roll the Q-tip over the pads until they're covered. Then its a good idea to mark the date and parents on a string tag or piece of tape. The best time I've found to pollinate tropical hibiscus is from the fall thru spring, seems to me they don't set seed well when its hot. Best of luck!

Thanks for the information. I will try. It is getting pretty hot here in S. Louisiana.

Dave, who is that gorgeous flower you pictured above?

Also, how long does it take for a seed pod to ripen?

(Zone 11)

Ardesia, that flower is a seedling that has yet to be named. The eye zone is actually a metallic silver color. I am just starting to evaluate some clones of this plant for a possible future release.

Seed pods for me usually average about 4 to 6 weeks to ripen depending on the plant and temperatures.

Hmmm, My American Maid arrived mid April with a pod and although it has grown since then it is still bright green. I'll bag it anyway, just in case it is not a dud.

Very pretty seedling, Dave.

Thanks Brugie, it was hybridized by Richard Johnson.

Heres an interesting article written by him that is good to read if you plan to do some of your own crosses, good luck! http://cozumel.globat.com/~hibiscusoftahiti.com/seed_selection.htm#table_of_contents
