Got a question, Soon I will get chickens again, had them 20 years ago and finally I get some again.
However the coop I have this time is so different of what I had 20 years ago...so i'm a bit lost.
What do i put on the floor? I have an actuall coop, where the layingnests are..than an other room for the indoor run...and there is a little door for the outdoor run.
this might sound stupid, but when I had my first chickens I lived in the Netherlands with total different winters and they only had an outdoor run year around and where indoors at night.
Here with long winters with lots of snow they do need an indoorrun...but again..what do I put on the floor?
Is it possible to put dirt on the concrete floor in the indoor run...and scoop that up to use later(the next spring) in my vegeble garden?
what on the bottom of the coop
I will bump you back up, but I' still learning myself, so don't ask me ,lol.
conc rete floor is a great start! i use wood chips, and some straw too. about 3 inches deep, get it deeper if you can [have your door open OUT will help]
my inside coop is about 8x10. most poop is under where they roost at night, so i clean that out first, right out the door into the outside run. then scoot what is in front of the nesting boxes to under the roosts, then clean out the nest boxes, which is mostly clean, just drop on the floor in front. i also prinkle dried chamomile flowers and/or chamomile tea in it to speed up the composting process and keep down odor [smells nice in there!]. add new bedding as necessary.
i know some folks who clean it out once a year. i like to do it monthly, it is up to you! i also have a hoe, broom and shovel handy. a lot of poop falls on the roof of the brooder, i scrape it into the pile which goes out the door.
eventually what is in the outside run gets wheeled out and dumped on an unused part of the garden, where the chickens can pick through it one last time and take their dust baths.
between chickens, guineas, and ducks, i have some really nice garden soil!
have fun with your chickens. make a garden just for them ;-)
