Help with sand in pond?

Jackson, MI(Zone 5b)

I have been working on my new pond for the last month or so and with adding plants, edging with rock and building the waterfall a lot of sand and dirt as settled on the shelves. What can I do about it? I don't have a pond vac and don't have the money to get one right now but would like to have a clear pond or is this just the way ponds are? This is my first pond so I am not sure what to expect.

The sand will eventually find its way and collect at the lowest point in the pond. When it does, and if it is unsightly or so much that it is going to be a breeding ground for bad bacteria, than scoop it out. You could hasten the process by forcing the sand with the stream from a hose until it flows down to the bottom. Have you added fish yet? A new pond is such an exciting experience. Please share more about size, location, fish, plants all the good stuff. Pictures?

Thanks Snapple - I guess I will just have to work it off of the shelves little by little. I actually started a post names Almost Done with some pictures of my progess. I have added 2 butterfly koi last week along with some snails and the rest of my plants. I will try to get some more pictures in the next week or so.

Thanks for the help!

Hey great! I'll get to that post! The koi and the plants are going to add some debris to the pond anyway. If there isn't a whole lot of sand you might wind up not really having to do anything.
