Sad event

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

This morning I went to the greenhouse to look for something. As I opened the door I spotted 5 chicks posed to run out so I shooed them as I closed the door behind me. I heard a loud squawk and looked to see one of my chicks crushed by the door. She died a few mins later even though I had not fully closed it. I think she had slipped in under the door while I was looking at the others. She was one of the friendlier chicks so I feel extra bad about her. I buried her in our pet cemetery.

oh, i am soooo sorry! i can't tell you how many chickens i have closed the door on, but they are usually on top of it and just get a bruised toe!

my heart goes out to you. i found one of my bantams dead this morning in Brandywine's side of the barn. apparetnly whil ei was gone yesterday and DH was finishing up the doors for the new pens, she flew out [i had already moved them into the pens, my bad]. she must have spent the night kinda lost, i didn't see her missing, but then again, all those bantam cochins make a big pile of fluff, and i thougth all the fluff was there.

i think she got stepped on.

hugs

Thank you tf and I am really sorry about your bantam. Little bits of fluff and we get so attached to them. I must have looked awful when Paul got home and heard about the chick cause he immediately suggested we buy some more chicks. We placed an order at Cackle for 10 Welsummers and 10 Buttercups to arrive first week of June. I couldn't get through to their phone, constantly busy this morning. Didn't make me feel better about the chick but still was a very nice thing for him to do. I guess he figures if I have lots of chickens I won't regret one lost. Haven't gotten a confirmation from Cackle on the order though.

I am so sorry about your babies. I know it make us feel so bad when we caused something to happen. Don't beat yourself up because you know it was an accident and they forgive us.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Thank you makshi. I feel bad because it seemed a pointless waste of her life. If only I hadn't gone in there. What I was looking for wasn't even in there after all.

Sorry about your little one. I know my pet cemetery has grown this year too. Accidents happen, on my parents wedding day, May 21, 1960 my Mother (not a mother for a couple of years :) ) got something out of the frig and closed the door and it was one of the big old heavy doored ones from years ago and she instantly killed a kitten in it. So accidents happen and we all learn from them.

Sorry about your little chic .

I have baby bantams, but they are not cochins.Cochins are so pretty,I had 2 black ones once for short while.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks LoraK and whatsupdoc. I now added a second divider between them and the door. I had used my dismantled shelf unit to block the door hoping to prevent escapes. I now have a piece of wire shelving blocking them (for a while cause in a few weeks it won't stop them) from getting close to the door. Now I also visually check the door before I shut it. Hopefully I can prevent another accident like this one.

Oh no :(
I'm always afraid that will happen to one of ours. They always dart for the door.
So sorry to hear that MollyD.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks smedgekles. They're so darn fast too. It's really hard keeping an eye on them at times. I walk very carefully in there and try to never turn around or back up without looking where my feet are going and moving slowly in case someone runs up to me.

Sorry about that Molly, I know how ya feel. Seems to be a rough year for us huh?

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Isn't it though!

Molly, I feel sad for you too. I went out this afternoon to check on my babies and found one of the keets dead. I had noticed it wasn't as large as the others, but thought it was just a smaller type. Guess it wasn't.

There is alway something that tells us that one won't make it but we don't want to see it. I went through this with that little duck that was wrong from the moment it arrived. i tried to convince myself it would be alright.

Sorry about your little keet GG

Thanks, Molly.

My goodness that is a lot of eggs for a little girl. I sure wouldn't want to have 11 babies at once. :)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, there are two of them, maybe they will share like Apple and Pansy did. they have 16 chicks between the two or them, they move around so quick takes me forever to count them, but THEY know where they all are at any given time. looks like they are going to keep laying. good thing we are ahving a heat wave so they won't have to sit on them 24/7!

GG, i was being sarcastic LOL

here they are after their baths for the show...

sorry for your lose mollyd but u are a realy good chicken owner who pays a lot of attention to her chicks so dont let it get ya down hope u feel better soon

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks Sue, Thanks Lucky. One of my chicks is making me feel better. I usually spend an hour in the morning after chores sitting with the chicks while they run around. I find it very relaxing. There is a small Buff Orpington (I think it's a little hen) that twice now has climbed onto my lap, then my shoulder where she coos and peeps into my ear. Finally she slides down into the crook of my arm and takes a nap looking all sweet and cuddly :-) I think she's setting me up for a long relationship!

Now, see. That is the Buff Orpington I know and love! Enjoy, Molly.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

she is a keeper!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

I call her Sweetie. She peeps for me to pick her up and then peeps in my ear while she preens me. Finally she cuddles up and goes to sleep. Some of the others get jealous so I end up with 4 to 5 bigger chicks sleeping on my legs. Do I get stiff! Most of those are NH and they look mostly like roos to me.
There is a very pretty Buff Orpington hen but she doesn't cuddle with me. Very classic in her looks.

Molly, OK, done hijacking your thread, just wanted to share. So glad you are bonding with your chicks, it will make your life sweeter and their training much easier. though sometimes it will feel like they are training you!

Is that a baby duck tf? What kind?
No problem! Hijack away. Life is the beginning of the cycle. We've talked about the end of the cycle already so it's okay to move to the beginning.
