Naked chick queston

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

Has anyone else had a chick that won't grow feathers? It's a light Brahma and all it' s siblings have feathers now. All he has to show at almost 2 months old is fuzz and a few undefdeveloped feathers on his wings. He is the silliest looking thing I've ever seen. Anybody got a cue? I have never in my lif seen something like this.

Jyl,
Post some pictures so that we can see your naked chicken. I'm curious as to what he looks like....... Jean529, my daughter, wants a good laugh.

One of my Welsummers was extremely slow to feather--maybe not that slow, but pretty close. At 4 months she is fine.

all my brahma bantams were so slow, i coudlnt' even tell they were Brahmas till were almost two months old!

i have two dark Brahmas now that are slow but a little better, and two shite cochins that are really slow... they are about 6 weeks old...

haven't a clue if this is a sgfin of carrying some disease, or failing to thrive, or just a late bloomer?

I have 2 Silver Lakenvelders that did the same thing went completely bald just a little fuzz, I was sure there was something wrong with them, but they eating well and growing. All the other chickens picked on them, I had to build them their own pen. I was determined to save them. 11weeks old now and finally getting feathers and back in with the other chickens. They are going to be the most beautiful hens white bodies with jet black necks and tails.

I have a RIR with no tail VERY STRANGE looking we call her Kiwi, she looks like a kiwi. This is my first time with chickens and I don't know if this rare, or some kind of birth defect. Will she be able to lay eggs or should I cull her?

Judy249--have you looked at MollyD's mystery chick? Could it be a Lakenvelder? Under "one chick is different " link.

How old is your RIR? One of my Welsummer's was very slow to get a tail...although her primaries came in normally.

Catscan-- My RIR is 11 weeks old she looks like a kiwi bird real low slung in the back end kind of gives her a humpback look, she has no tail nub at all. She is real healthy and is as big as the other RIR's. What do you thank- deformed?

MollyD's mystery bird looks just like my Lakenvelders at that age, but they have blue/black legs. I got them from Ideal I also have three golden Lakenvelders looks like her other ones but with blue/black legs

I think the tailessness (no caudal appendage) is a mutation. It shows up in a few breeds, the Araucana and the Persian Rumpless (Manx Rumpy) are the only ones I know of and I think it can be linked with a lethal gene if you breed like to like. But I have never heard of one showing up spontaneously in a tailed breed. Maybe someone else has?

Kiwi is hilarious, and your silver Lakens are deliccious!!!

i would think that if she has a vent and ovaries, she will lay eggs.... will be intersting to find out... i wouldn't use her as a breeder, obviously.

Judy do you have pictures of those golden Lakenvelders ? I'd love to see how they compare to those questionable Delawares !
