Sorry if this is totally off topic, I'm hoping to tap the great experience of the folks that frequent this board ....
I've planted a number of things - bulbs, hosta, etc. and have noticed that a lot of them came out of ground kind of rumpled and deformed - like they were beat up, before they sprouted. Any idea why this would have happened, and to a variety of plants? I don't know if it's because of my fairly rocky soil, or if this is just something I should have expected for their first year (?), but it's weird.
Any ideas?
Plant question...
Hey, PC!
How rocky is your soil? OR have the horses been walking there? We don't have rocks here, but I once had hostas that came up that way when they had been walked on in early-early spring.

Could be the rocks in the soil, but I've also seen this when we get early warmth followed by cold in late winter. I think they start to sprout and the tips get cold damage.
Thanks for the responses, both of you .... you know, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the horses were the culprit. Their respect for my "off-limits" areas is pretty limited.
And the soil here is *very* rocky in spots, and just kinda rocky in others. But the clay is evenly distributed.
Thanks again, I guess I'll have to see next year if things do better hoof-less. And hope for a steady temp. winter!
