Can chickens be raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia?

Jenkintown, PA

I live in the Philly burbs and am learning how to live without oil...Where do I go to find out if it is legal to raise chickens in my back yard? I'm starting with gardening but would like to add poultry.

I'm not sure about Philly--but you can try calling Animal Control for your local government--it is in the front of most phone books or in a sections called "Government." Just don't tell them who you are:0). I also found a site on the internet that listed chicken friendly cities. Often the big cities are better about it than the small rural towns who don't want to seem too "country".

Good Luck!

I would call Code Enforcement for starters.

I read your blog and loved it! too bad you don't have tomato or rhubarb leaves, that is what i would spray on those beans!

anyhow, if you can go "incognito", the best way to find out is to visit your city offices. ask to see any ordinances regarding pets and livestock. and if poultry aren't specifically adressed under either, then those ordinances don't apply to chickens!

welcome to Dave's!
