I need to move my garden for next year. the neighbor's japanese maple (see picture) will cause too much shade next year. what should I be doing now to prepare the spot? Should I lay tarp to kill the lawn?

One method is to lay twelve layers of newspaper over the sod and then just heap some compost or soil over the top. In the fall I'd pile on some leaves and till it under and then next spring you'll be all set to plant it up.
