Plant ID please

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Can someone please help me ID this plant. I think it is a ginger, based on the bloom. Any other ideas? If it's ginger, do you know what variety?

Looks more like a bromeliad to me. I have some that are similar but the foliage stands more upright. The blooms are the same though. Don't ask me to give you an ID though. I'd have to lie about it.

My first thought was a haliconia of some sort, but the leaves are wrong. I think Janet is right. It may be a bromeliad, but that is an extensive group.

I have a bromeliad with a very similar bloom, but the foliage is different. After looking at the plant files it may be some form of or similar to Queen's Tear or Billbergia nutans
The pictures there seem to show a variety of foliage

Thanks, I think y'all are right and it's a bromeliad. I'd have never guessed it. I'm used to the ones with wider, thicker leaves.

Some of the photos on the entry for Billbergia nutans show other varieties and are on the wrong entry. Yours appears to be Billbergia nutans var. schimperiana which has wide leaves and large blooms

I have 3 types of these plants with different types of leaves and different sizes of blooms and love them all. They can be planted in the ground and are winter hardy.

You're welcome.

Thank you also for identifying that bromeliad. I looked yesterday until my eyes started swimming, trying to figure out which one it was. Now I have added the ID tag to my photos.

Thanks again!

When I first saw this thread I thought "you know, that looks just like my Queen's Tears that I just got at the last RU." I didn't know it was a bromeliad, but I thought it might be. But I thought bromeliads died after they bloomed.

Bromeliads may die back after blooming but they will put out suckers. Just keep watering and taking care of it and you can get two more plants for the price of the one.

Sounds like a deal to me.:)
