Need Advice on Soil kit

Gainesville, FL

I will be ordering a soil kit Wednesday .

I would like for some here to tell me what kind they use and what they like and dislike about it.

I also want PH tester combo. I looked at one that was $130 but I am ready to pay for professional kit after all the different types of soil I have now.

I have ben so busy with baby chics and ducks we just got last week and spring cleaning and plant transplanting, planting, etc..
that I haven't been back lately.

Thanks

Why don't you use your state lab for a soil test? You can get a kit from your extension office and the fee is nominal. A lot of the home kits are not as accurate, unfortunately. I do use a cheap one I bought at a big box store for certain areas, but I normally do a in depth soil test about every 3 years. Gives me a baseline to work with.

Thanks Doccat, . I have been using them for years, but I have so many different areas to test plus I it's a 70 mile round trip .And then a 2 week wait, so I need one of the professional test kits.

I used one in college a few times, when I took one semester in horticuture, but didn't learn anything about propgation ,just science and plant id, which I forgot the thousands of plants we had to id .So it was a waste of time almost. And for an older woman mind blowing .

We have some aeas that have compost, some that have mostly sand and others where huge burn piles were from clearing for homesite. So I would have to take dozens of samples and they cost $17 a sample.
Someone here said they had a pro tester, but I did't write it down and forgot who said. I think they said it cost about $130 plus shipping. I'll pay more than that at extention office for dozens of samples.

I have finally saved up for it .

I know mos farmers can look at a plant and see what it needs, NOT ME,haha! Plus I am learning about poultry ,very time consuming. Thanks again .

I've been looking into soil testers and found an old post in the forums that recommended the one by Oakton. The person said he heard about it from a person who worked in a soil testing lab. It's more that I want to pay but it sounds like it's in your price range.

Thanks Bevcat, I will have to save for it, but we are not spring chickens anymore and unnessasary hard work because of lack of nutrients in the soil is a shame .

I bought a cheap $7.00 ph tester yesterday, hope it works until we can do better .

We use to have donkey doo but that was 5 yr.s ago ' no more equine ' so now we have to do more guessing.
