Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I went to this park for the first time yesterday. Wow! Lots of birds to share. Here's a Little Blue Heron.

Immature Yellow-Crowned Night Heron? It was a pretty dark day. I'm noticing these photos look really dark on this thread. Oh well. I'm still excited about all these water birds!

Common Moorhen.

Nice selection of birds, but the water sure is polluted with Duck Weed.

This is what the ducks are looking at.

Gary, thanks for the ID!

Here's another one that I could not figure out. Didn't get any good shots of it either.

This is my last one. I saw lots of these, but they were very hard to photograph. Didn't come anywhere near the path. All of them had gray beak and legs and a gray patch on the rump. Couldn't find anything that fit.

An immature Little Blue Heron. The white immature birds become blotched with blue-gray as bird changes to adult plumage.

Gary

Wow! I'm happy you had such a wonderful day. So green and lush. I absolutely love your posting at 12:58. It does look like a paradise for sure.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Angele, thanks! Lush is a good word!

Gary, thanks for the IDs! Also, there was a lot of duckweed (that's another one you've IDd for me!). The alligators seemed to like it. Can you find the alligator in this photo? Hint: just his head is sticking up out of the duckweed.

Thanks for the confirmation Resin. Here's a sound ID question for ya. While I was taking the photo of the Mississippi Kite, I heard what I think were two owls calling to each other. It was about 6:15, so starting to get late but not dark yet. I was entering a thickly wooded area with lots of old trees with nesting cavities when I heard what sounded kind of like Mourning Doves the size of SUVs. OK, maybe not that big, but it was a huge sound. I only heard them a few times before they stopped. I wasn't able to spot them. What do you think?

Here's one of those cool trees with a potential nesting cavity. Can't resist uploading another photo!

Looks like a very cool place to visit!

Can't do much with the description, unfortunately! (and a recording wouldn't have helped either, as my computer sound system doesn't work). Try a web search for sound recordings of Great Horned Owl and Barred Owl, to see if either matches.
