Look what was sunning him(or her)self on a lotus leaf this morning. According to the BugFiles it is a click beetle, a good bug who devours wood boring insects. This critter is at least a good 2" long.

The "wood boring insect eating" part sort of scares me; it would appear to indicate that there are wood boring insects around, wouldn't it????? 'scuse me while I call Terminex.........

Have you seen famed children's author Eric Carle's book about the Click Beetle? Very endearing...Looks just like the one he drew for the book. Cool to see it in person....

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Yes, I too fondly remember the bugs in Eric Carle's books but my boys are 35 and 41 so it has been a while, LOL.

Sadly, my grandchildren, at 3 and 7, are more interested in computers than books. You wouldn't believe how fast the 3 year old can type. No wonder there is no romance in the world anymore. I loved the fantasy of the older children's books. The toddler books of today like "Everybody Poops" just aren't as endearing. I know, I know, I am showing my antiquity........

Raleigh, NC

No, you aren't. I have quite a collection of children's books that I hope my child will care about some day, but he, too, is now at the age where the computer holds more interest. I try to at least keep it balanced....but between the TV, computer etc, its hard! I heard someone say the other day, "..remember when you couldn't get kids to come INSIDE? Now you can't get them to go OUTSIDE!". Not completely true, but as a parent, wow, you do have to fight against all the technology stuff to keep it in its proper place!

PS Here's something fun--I just showed this picture of a real click beetle to my son, and he said, quote, "... thats a REAL Click Beetle? Really? Too cool...!" So you see, all is not lost...and he does remember the book.....

Cool pic, ardesia!
I work in an elementary school, so I still get to share some of those endearing oldies with our students. My 'baby' is almost 19 and she still loves some of the oldies but goodies. Just the thought makes me smile:->

since we're talking about books and keeping our teens interested in reading (shh don't tell them) have any of you read books by Chris Crutcher? I was pretty amazed by his stories when Cam my 15 yr old first brought home a book of his last year (Staying Fat for Sara Burns) we ended up reading all of them one after another and talking about the books...it was a pretty cool feeling to hear how he felt about reading some of the books, they tackle some pretty tough issues that all teens face....

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

A teen that reads????? How cool is that!

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

Mine does thank goodness:-)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

My kids actually like me reading them books and the 5 year old is trying to read them on his own. On the other hand I pulled out an old NES and he loves video games. LOL.

as a kid I remember reading as one of my great ways to escape...The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe were my absol. fav. followed by that cute little mouse with a motercycle LOL

***everyone please pray for the George family here in Bluffton. their 17 yr old son Josh died today after an awful wreck after their prom sunday morning. he was not drinking, and had delivered all his friends home when he was t-boned by a drunk driver. he wasn't wearing a seatbelt, and was ejected. the driver fled the scene but was arrested later. it tuns out he was an illegal and did a similar crime in Dallas earlier. he has been on life support since sunday morning and in a coma, but today they had to make the decision to take him off. he died this evening. we are all devastated. he was a great guy captain of the BHS soccer team and well liked. he has a brother in 8th grade and a sister who is a senior. his dad died a couple years back, so this is very hard on his mom. also please pray for his girlfriend Alexa. i know he, and she's been thru a lot lately and has already lost anthe boyfriend before her move from Michigan. please keep all these people in yall's prayers as well as me. i did not really know him, but met him at my baptism a few weeks back. a lot of my friend know him, and are devastated... crying today and yesterday, having to be excused in class, and its really wearing on me because i am trying to be the best friend i can be by encouraging them and being the shoulder to cry on, and doing whatever i can to keep their spirits up. sp yeah.. please keep us all in your prayers. we really need them

That was a bad combo of events. They're not sure if that's the guy from Texas but his bond is so high he's not going anywhere.

On the book subject. The Bible counts, did you know back in the past many people from the country learned to read using the Bible. You might want to read the Koran actually. You go to many of the youth reviles etc and Koran would probably be a good read for you. There are people you'll know in the koran.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

thanks for the suggestion, but i think i'll pass up the koran! lol most if not all of the youth things are christian things. when you say that i'd know people in the koran, you mean like abraham & sarah and them right??

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Yep. Jesus is a prophet in the koran.

I have also read good night moon. LOL. Isn't that actuall, good night, good night? It's the one where the monkey steals the cage keys and let's all the animals out?

Oh no, I think I know Josh's mother. Hope that's not the same George family who lives in Hertiage lakes. Father was an air force pilot who died a few years ago in Iraq.

Bev
