Ad Aware scan failure

I'm new to computers....Windows 2000, Sony Vaio laptop, with Spybot Search and destroy and Ad Aware.
After updating Ad Aware from SE to new version, It won't complete a scan. I saw one suggestion to run it in safe mode for a scan. I tried that, and it got hung up on conditional folders, and would not complete. I've reduced the size of files scanned to 30000, with no completed scan.

The frustrating thing is I'm unable to get onto Lavasoft forum site..."page unavailable" comes up.

Does anyone have a suggestion beyond what I've already tried?
Does Spybot do a complete job and Ad Aware is unnecessary?
