Delawares?

Woodsville, NH

Hi
The man I am buying my tamsworth pigs from has welsummers, buff orpingtons and delawares chicks for sale. I would like to add some welsummers and orps, he said Delawares are great dual purpose birds so I could eat the extra roos. Does anyone have any opinions on their laying or meat? Thanks in advance

I say take them! What's the worse that can happen?

Lora, you are so lucky! The Delaware is suppose to be a wonderful layers of "large rich brown eggs" and was the top broiler before the Cornish Cross was developed. And my own experience, limited though it is, is that they have great personalities.

i would go for the welsummers and delwares.... the orps are apparently over-rated...

tf they look real nice in their leather jackets with cigarettes hanging out the corner of their beaks ^_^

Ok then I will go for the Delawares. He has plenty of them, only 4 welsummers and 4 orps. I will most likely end up with the welsummers, orps and 10 or so delawares. I think he only want a couple of bucks each for the Delawares. If the orps are mean then they will be processed with the meat birds and all the roos.
Thanks everyone!

Oh, I love my buff orpington. I've had good luck with them being really big and pretty steady. My current gal lays the biggest jumbo egg I have ever seen. It is HUGE

Maybe I'll have some BO hens in my gang. I'm suspecting that 99% of them are roos though ^_^

I ended up getting four welsummers, he only charged me for 3 because on had curly toes (it got a shoe put on as soon as we got home, its only a day old so they should straighten out) 14 delwares and ten buff orpingtons. I thought I would make it worth my drive out there. I did get to see my lil piggies! Well, the sow carrying the lil piggies. Nice well taken care of piggies! I am getting three so I am waiting an extra 2 weeks. They will be processed just before Christmas. Hmmm, do you think I can give pork chops as gifts? LOL
His wife said the parents to BO are the sweetest birds. She loves having them around even with small children. So fingers crossed they will be good birds. I am going to keep some and sell the rest with my chicks that are due to hatch in a few days.

I'd take chops for my Xmas present any day!! LOL Think of the prices at the supermarket and these would be of superior quality.

I'd love to see pictures of your Delawares as they mature. I want to compare them to my 5 and see what mine really are!
