I am new to KOI and want to start a koi hospital/emergency/quaranteen tank with a 75 gallon tank. I was told to get a Fluval 405 brand filter system to hang on the side on the tank but not knowing a lot about the different brands, I didn't want buyers remorse due to the fact that I have no experience in this. Can you please recommend a quality filter that is quiet and easy to clean (and doesn't have to be cleaned that often if possible. . .). Also, I would welcome pro's and con's of one brand over another. Also, I don't need a "mercedes benz" if I can get a good "chevy" ($$$$) if you know what I mean!
Holding tank filter recommendations-Advice please
What I use is the TetraPond Bio filters. Its small and sets on the rim of my little stock tank. Cost $65.00 plus shipping. Cleaning is easy and replacement filters are 14.00.
Of course you have to buy a pump too.
I use this tank for baby fish, when I have them.
I have a Fluval 405. They are cannister filters. They sit underneath the tank. Mine is for an indoor 75 gal aquarium ( planted tetra tank). They are expensive and not all that easy to clean. Also in six years I'm on my third one because of failures. Both failures were different and caught me off guard. It was easier to just grab a new one off the shelf from the local pet store so that I could easily get up and running quickly rather than take the time to plumb in a different one. Plus, extended down time in a planted aquarium can have disastrous consequences for fussy tropical fish. I have a new Tetra filter on hand in case of another failure as a replacement. No more Fluval's for me.
Thanks snapple for your input-this is the kind of information I need to know. I still haven't purchased one and know that I have to for my "breeding tank". (I posted another thread about one of my new fish being filled with eggs). It's only a matter of time!
I think crazy4brugs recommendation is a sound one. Happy spawning!
One of the people in our Watergarden club has successfully raised numerous Koi babies over the years and he puts a "spawning mop" in when he knows he is going to have a spawn. It is 3 feather (not real feathers) dusters connected by a wooden dowel with a float on top and when the Koi spawn she lays her eggs in this mop. When the eggs have been fertilized he can just pull out the feather duster and move it to his baby tank. If someone wants some of his eggs he just pulls out the duster and inserts the replacement they brought with them and is all set to catch more eggs. The duster also gives the babies cover as they grow in his baby tanks.
I used this set up with the goldfish and then just pulled out the mop so I didn't have a bunch more goldfish to catch and it worked great. This year I need to anchor it though, last year it kept floating into the skimmer.
