Hello Everyone. This is a great forum! So much info and great advice. I've been a lurker but just couldn't keep my mouth shut anymore;) I want one of everything!!!
How hard are the jasmines to propogate? I would love to put a couple in our sensory garden but my budget is shot. If its easy I can handle it.
Tina
Great forum!!
Good question, Tina (and welcome, btw)....I'll be interested in hearing what the others say. Mine have only been rec'd as rooted plants so I can't speak from personal experience.
I've been trying to root a cutting of my neighbor's Jasminum Sambac in water, I can let you know of my progress (or not, lol!)
Rob
I have no luck rooting them in water or with cuttings. I rely on layering --bend a branch into soil and put a rock on top of it.
...but I can't....see the vine is going OVER the fence from his side to mine (that's where I got the cutting from) but it doesn't go close enough to the ground for layering...humm...
LOL!! I would be doing the same thing if I were you. Perhaps try rooting them both in water and soil.
Yep! I just love "stealing" neighbor's vines, hehehe....on the other neighbor's side, there is a gorgeous bougainvillea coming over the fence too...I gave it a "little hand" by directing it where I want it to grow....
where I come from(in India), when you steal fruit from other's trees, they always taste better than the ones from your own trees.^_^
Kinda like when someone else cooks for you eh, Usha?
Funny, Roberta, MY neighbor tosses my vines back over to my side...LOL They're SO not "plant" people...
Jasmines are not the easiest to root, but I usually get a few to take out of maybe 8 cuttings-so not that bad either :) I root them in a soiless mix that I keep moist, but not soaking wet either. Higher soil temps are necessary with these. I think that I have rooted all kinds of jasmine-the sambacs, nitidums, etc
I love plants but I still shove my neighbor's vines back on their side of the fence. The only thing they have though is the white potato vines which are a dime a dozen out here. I do have a few myself because they make for great privacy screening in a few key places in my yard, but I really don't want their vines too! LOL
That's so funny guys! Chantell, what kind of vine do your neighbors toss back at you? I just don't get "non-plant" people! Gosh they must be unhappy!
Ecrane, I hear you, thw white potato vine is "too comon" over here...plus it has no fragrance, so I see no point. Tigerlilly, do you have one of those bottom heaters for your cuttings? I don't have any of that stuff...(no room).
Sweet Autumn Clematis - realized too late I should have pruned that puppy back in Feb/March...oh well...will have plenty of fuzzy seeds to share with anyone wanting them...LOL Heard rave reviews about its scent but didn't really notice it last year when it was in bloom. Course I'm a scent snob...give me Jasmines/Gardenias/Nicotiana/spicy Petunias any ole day...oh yeah, least I forget Plumies, lavenders, lilacs
I'm becoming one too, hehehe...and I bought 2 sweet aut. clematis for my fence this spring, I can't wait to see what the smells is like, the very reason I got them was the fragrance...we'll see!
ahhh ya goofy girl...I would have gladly sent you cuttings from mine...neighbor surely would've thanked me!!! ^_^
haha! That's allright...
