Crossvine info

Is cross vine a once bloomer or does it bloom throughout the season?

I bought one in bloom a couple months ago and I'm training it up an old wooden ladder. The blooms faded and it's pretty much just been green for a couple weeks now, it even set a seed pod.

I had it up against the house but it looked like it was starting to feel its way up under the Hardy board and it scared me a little so I moved it, lol. In moving it I now see a new bloom. Just one...so I'm curious.

Also can I keep it in captivity in a pot or do I need to set it free? :)

We planted a few plants by a fence last year. They grew to the top, put on a great show this spring, and have given us a few flowers every now and then since. I think their main show is early spring, then sporadically after that.

This shot was taken in mid-March this year.

Crossvine sometimes reblooms a little through the summer, but the main bloom is in early spring. You can keep it in a pot, but it will never reach it's potential that way. It is a gorgeous vine and it should be given a chance to do its best. Here is a picture of mine.

WOW, frostweed, that is gorgeous! How tall is that fence, (they are on fence, aren't they) and how long did it take to cover it? I can't wait for ours to look like that!

Thank you Pam, the fence is four feet high and 80 feet long, it is a traffic stopper. It took four years to fill in, and the vines are planted 10 feet apart. I love the fact that they are evergreen and have no pests or disease.
Here is a close up of the flowers.

Very pretty..........I see I have some waiting to do......not my best activity.

Beautiful flowers.....your's has some yellow in it.....I don't believe our's do, but I wish they did. I will have to inspect tomorrow.

Your crossvines are both gorgeous! Thank you for the information :)

Frostweed I've seen your crossvine pic before and it's what both inspired me to get one and scared me about it eating the house, lol

Thank you Prickle, just put it in a place away from the house where it can have lots of room to grow, and let it do its thing. It is a strong grower, but easy to manage.

We have two very large, heavy timber arbors over our three level deck. Wisteria and cross vine are absolutely magnificent in bloom. The rest of the summer they provide really cool shade.

Will crossvine grow well and bloom well in an area that does not receive a lot of sun?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

As you can see in the first picture, some of our crossvine is in part shade, and doing well. That spot in our yard gets a lot of morning light, but is sheltered from the hot afternoon heat. That's why it's also the place I plant our Dahlias.

Hazel, I have another vine on the north side of my yard and it does fine too.

Thanks for the info, Josephine. I have been wanting to find an evergreen vine to grow on 2 lattice work panels that are right next to each other in an area that does not receive a lot of sun right now. I need to have my oak tree thinned out. i tried to grow morning glories there last year; however, they did not receive enough light to do very well. I have planted malabar spinach there in large containers this year. The only problem is ... very little dirt. Do the crossvines reseed themselves and/or spread by underground runners to the point that they can become a nuisance?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine hardly make any seed at all, so no problem there, they are also very well behaved as far as runners go, nothing like some other vines, I hardly ever have any strays, and mine have been there 8 years at least, so I am very happy with them.

Thanks, again.
