Hardy (?) Brugs - please share your smarts!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

You know when you KNOW you SHOULD'VE saved a link to a certain thread...but didn't? So sad!!!

Noticed many familiar faces over here...big hello to all!

I'd greatly appreciate it if all you Brug Gurus would share with me names of any that tolerate cold better then others. I know I read someone talking about keeping their brug IN the ground and their zone being the same as mine (7A) - I think. Any info would be very helpful...thanks so much!!! While you're sharing...if you could mention those listed with the fragrance you liked best - it would be a double blessing!!

Hi Chantell!

I *think* that this thread may help you..."AuntB" mentioned a brug that she was going to try to overwinter in the ground:

That thread was for a seedling.. but good info anyway!

Chantell.. just do a search for "cold tolerant" and then narrow it down to the brug threads only.. I just did and found a ton of threads..

Too many to list!

My favorite for fragrance is Whiskers.. When she is blooming, I can smell her all the way across the street!!!

I am in 7b.. we got down to 18 or 16 this past winter and had snow a few times but it did not last long. I had my first brug planted in the ground. It was in a protected large courtyard. Just before our first freeze, I cut it back to abou 18" above all y's. I then wraped with bubble wrap the main trunk and the y's to about 12" above the y's. I did several layers...not really thick.. maybe 3 layers thick. We also mulched several inches deep about 2 ft around the base. We did nothing else for during the winter but let it sit there in the cold. When the weather warmed up, we could see green under the bubble wrap. We threw a sheet over it the nights of the last few good freezes and then I unwraped it.. there were lots ot green leaves under the bubblewrap! Every bit of stem that was covered with any bubble wrap was healthy and immediately outside the bubble wrap it was dead wood. I am putting several more in the ground this year and saving my bubblewrap.
