Air layering?

North Augusta, ON

Can Hoyas be started this way? A bit of damp sphagnum wrapped around the vine(still attached to the plant) and sealed in with some plastic wrap.

Would it work? Anybody ever tried it?

I would think it would work great! Especially sometimes you can rootlets forming along the mature stems.

If your vine doesn't show those stubby rootlets along the portion where you want to 'airlayer', I would slightly wound the vine, dust with rootones (or Dip N Grow), then wrap it up. Keep moist and it should do well.

I've simply take cuttings and stick them back into the same mother pot/basket. It took a few weeks to get established.

I did with a cinnamomifolia woody stems, it took awhile to root but it did root nicely.

Thanks!!

I've stuck cuttings back in the pot too. I'm hoping maybe the air layering might speed up the rooting process without taking the chance of losing the cuttings, especially with the harder to root varieties.

Maybe I'll experiment with my old Carnosa to see...

This is the first way I ever propagated a hoya (or any plant, for that matter). I had just learned about it in a class I was taking and so I went home and tried it with my mom's carnosa. That was 11 years ago. It worked really well so I would definitely try it with harder to root varieties.

HI...as we speak i have the vines of a H. heuschkeliana and those of H. walliniana laying over a pot of perlite with a rock weighing them down. 3 weeks = roots. Will cut them maybe in a few days.
