Lime for Corn?

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

We cleared a wooded area which was growing Pine, Oak and Maple trees. We are in the process of harrowing and I thought that we should add some limestone but DH thinks since corn likes nitrogen we don't need the lime. Not sure is PH is in relation to nitrogen.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Sue

Since this is a brand new plot, I would get a soil test at your County Extension Service. Unless you know what the pH of the soil is or other nutrients present, you won't know what to add. The right pH just allows the plants to fully utilize the nutrients that are already there (and any that you add).

Agreed. You don't know what to add...or not, until you know what is there...or missing. It can upset the balance of things by just assuming that something is needed. (and with the price of fertilizer these days, I'd hate to spend the money if I don't have to)

Thanks everyone! I'll have to get it tested-it's $8.50 but like you said that's alot cheaper than buying something that isn't needed.
