Sorry but all I can see in that photo is a blur.
MollyD
Picture is too blurry to tell how it looks, but I think some ours had something like that as well. It disappeared after a while.
thanks molly d it is a happy mothers day! And to you too!!
darn my camera sucks. well, I hope your right and that it does go away...it looks sorta like a hernea...
One of my chicks had a small protuberance where its vent is. Like a slight prolapse. It seems to have gone away. I would just watch it carefully and make sure it can eat, drink and poop without trouble.
Some of our Sebrights had what I called prolapse poop butt. It went away. They are now 9 weeks old.
But I think I know what your talking about. It is a knot or bump below the rear. Most the time it goes away. Keep an eye on it like catscan said to make sure the chick is doing well otherwise.
it is probaly its ambilical cord yess they have themm though you cant always see it it will go away after a couple weeks
ambilical cord did cross my mind because it is blackins at the end like its going to fall off but I figured if it was that that the other chicks would have it. Your probably right tho. I'm just being a paranoid mommy.
I think luckycharm is right. Now that I think about it a couple of my chicks did have it and it just fell off. As long as it isn't looking wet or infected, they should be fine. No one warns worried chick mothers about these things.......:0)
Hooray meg! so glad you got some chicks. thought aobut you while i was in lubbock.
tf
mine get it somtimes it happens when they get the yolk in but the cord is not disloged in time before it comes out any way i hope u have fun with them they will be a handful got any favourites yet and i like the colours on them
Congratulations on your new babies, Meg! I am thinking
that if the black spot is between the vent and the tail,
it could be pasty butt. If it's between the vent and the
breastbone, perhaps it is the umbilicus was not completely
dry and is drying up. If it's pasty butt, it will be a chunk
of dark feces material that starts with diahrea, and cakes up
on itself, getting larger. If it gets bad, it can block the vent
and cause the chick discomfort, and even die from it.
Warm water on a wash cloth to clean it gradually and
carefully till it's clean, and feed equal parts of cornmeal
with the starter for a couple days till it clears up. Lots of
chicks in large quantities in crowded pens at the feed
store get a lot of bacteria and show signs of this.
Pasty butt is what I was worried about when I first saw it so I tried to clean it with warm water and a wash closth but it seems to be rather connected to him... he wasn't to happy that I kept picking at it. He does have diahrea and is the only chick not to have a nice fluffy butt. His is always matted with poop so I clean it every night when I get home. Could it be possible he has both the ambilical cord and the pasty butt.... I dunno.
TF- I didn't get your post until Sunday and I think you said you left saturday, no? I'm still considering if I want some older ones to incorporate in with the babies? Is that generally a good idea? Lubbock is a bit far away from me (I'm on the East side of Dallas) but its doable if I have enough tiem to plan to go out there that day. Let me know the next time you plan to go into Lubbock and we'll see if we can work something out!
OK! next time will be august it looks like now, and we'll stay overnight.
thinking about going down that way in June for family vacation though, like around new deal and post... will let you know.
you really need some older so you can get eggs sooner! maybe by then you will know what you have and what you need.
but i am so glad you have something now!@
tf
Yes, Meg, sounds like pasty butt, your are doing
the right thing by cleaning it every day. It will seem
very much like it's a part of him, and it pulls on their
feathers and hurts, but must be done. careful not
to tear his delicate skin.
Not a good idea to mix age groups of chicks. The
younger ones appear small and weak to the older
ones, and they can peck it to death. Best to wait
till they all feather out to mix them, even then, they
will boss the younger ones around, but they should
be big enough to get out of the way in a hurry.
That sounds good TF let me know what yall's plans are!
Good to know I'm doing the right thing with cleaning and he is looking better so finger's crossed!
So glad he's better, Meg. I had a few with this
shipment that got pasty butt, but it cleared up
after a few days and they did fine.
how are you enjoying them? if you have extras, melvatoo in Dallas is thinkingof getting a few hens...
I need all that I've got for now, but I should get in touch with her. Where around Dallas is she located?
i dunno. dmail her ;-)
