We have an 8+ pound chicken that has been acting sickly. Tail down, just sits. She did get a gash on her side from the roosters spurs, but not enough of a gash to really cause the way she is acting. We think she has a broken egg in her because of what she poops. Same as the other chicken we had with the broken egg. Lots of yellowish egg looking stuff. She is big and never gets off the roost herself, we always take her down. We think maybe she jumped down and hurt her leg (she limps) as well as broke an egg in her. She eats very little but she does drink. We have also given her some milk which she seems to enjoy. Her comb and face though is very dark, almost a maroon color. The picture actually looks lighter to me than it really is. I always thought the comb and face gets pale if they are sickly. What causes it to be so dark?
Comb and face is really dark on chicken.
could be old age how old is it
by the look of her face she definately looks sick and not feeling well, poor girl. check her abdoman see if u feel anything there. if she is pooing yellow i'd assume egg also. have u tried giveing her warm baths and massage her abdomain towards her bum while in the water? alot of times it relaxes them and allows them to pass it. if not a few times a day for a couple days try that see if she does expell one. if one broke inside ALL pieces need removed or it will cut her insides unless it is a soft shell egg been breaking.
how long has it been since she laid her last egg? is there any chance she is broody? any chance she ate something she shouldn't have? how long has she been actng this way?
She is only 2 years old so it's not old age.
She has acted like this for a few days. I'm not sure when her last egg was laid, my son probably would know. And I don't think she is broody. She is in pain because she won't stand for very long and she walks slowly or hops. I felt her back and leg and thigh area yesterday and noticed when I touch a certain area of her upper hip/thigh area she seems to winch like it hurts. I'm sure she could have eaten somehting she shouldn't. You know how chickens are, they peck anything and try it.
Day before yesterday she really looked bad, even worse than she does now. We gave her cayenne pepper water and her color got better, but still dark.
I didn't think about the warm bath. We'll try that on her and see if it helps.
is that a production breed or a broiler breed? if u don't know what breed is she?
She is an RIR
hope you do the warm baths and she gets better soon.
if you give her weakened tea in her water, try some chamomile, or even a female tea like raspberry leaf, female toner, menstrual tea, pregnancy tea, or mother's milk tea...
i thought she was a rir but wanted to double check. there is a prob that broilers can get that is kinda similar but only broilers have it so it's not that which is a good thing. i'm not sure what all breeds r broilers that's why i askes i only know of a couple. definately try the bath see if u can tell if she is eggbound. if she is keep her in a warm dry, quiet place so she can rest and the dark will help detur laying. i would isolate her to keep an eye on her.
if she is not up her calcium. mabe she is not laying cause of lack of calcium. when mine do that i give them oyster shell and hard boiled eggs with crushed up egg shells. usually in about 3 days they pick up laying again.
maybe her leg is not in place properly or she twisted it ?
We tried a bath but she didn't seem to like it much. She wouldn't sit in the water and she wanted to jump out. I tried splashing some water on her bottom. We wrapped her in a towel and my daughter held her for a while. She just sat in her lap with her eyes closed.
When she stands she stands failrly straight so I don't think the leg is out of place. I also felt all over her leg and thigh to see if I could feel it out, but it feels just like the other.
During hte day we put her outside. There is a little shaded cubbyhole by the chickens pen and yard. We set her there with food and water. That way she feels like she is close to the other chickens which she seems to like and it is warm outside here.
Our little Sebright roo goes and stands by her. Since we lost our Polish hen and our Blue Cochin is sitting on eggs he is lonely. We let him out in the yard during the day so he doesn't bother the sitting Blue Cochin. When the Polish hen was alive they stayed together. Now he has no one to hang around with so when we put Peachew (the sick RIR) out he goes to her and stands by her. So adorable.
well, poor little guy...
just kept trying the baths. i have to hold them butt down in the water when they don't like it...
