Earth box help needed

Dade City, FL(Zone 9a)

I planted corn in an earth box. This might have been a stupid thing to do, but I didn't know. The stalks are now 5ft tall and the loose soil in the EB will not hold them up. Was this a bad idea or is there something I can do for them? They are growing like crazy.

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have the same problem with my EB veggies. They are growing like crazy, but wont stand up. I have been staking peppers today. I packed and watered the mix in like crazy too.

Stake the corn. Like you would for tomatoes.

Growing corn in an EB is NOT a crazy thing to do -- NOT growing corn in an EB is a crazy thing to do! Go look on the veggie forum for posts by TPlant who grew a whole crop of corn (32 stalks?) last season in his EBs.

And then come ask me how to cook that corn so next time you'll wanna grow 100 EBs of corn!

gardenglory -- Can you take some pictures to show us? your peppers must be huge if you have to stake them?

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

I will take a picture, they are not anywhere near huge yet, they just would not stand up. I just picked some nice cubanelles this morning, hope it will relieve some weight. I should have left them on till after the picture lol..They were pretty enough to show off. Something is eating my tomatoes at night and they got my little melons.....very litttle melons. I think Im going to put water out for whaterver animal it is. Hope that is what they are really looking for.

gardenglory -- Sounds like you have little creatures running around at night. I would use "Critter Ridder" or its equalivent. Raccoons love tomatos and so do possums and I'm certain they would not pass up a melon!

does that critter ridder work Tplant ? do you use it ?
I never thought about corn in an EB
i m getting hooked on EB's

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

It really worked for me! I had problems and bought the critter ridder. I had a family of racoons hanging around my garden and they loved my squash vines and tomatos. Sprayed and no more problems. In a way it was a shame because they were so cute and I am an animal lover...

GOod to hear it works
we have many many many racoons . living in our woods . we don't have a dog yet. :(
good to know thanks
they are cute ,but not in our tomatos :)
thanks
