Hi Makshi, I love black pagoda, such beautiful foliage. Can't wait to see your picture!

I hope you don't mind if I join your thread as I also received a couple of great things from Lin! We did a trade and she let me request my favorites to go with a past swap we had done!

I had fallen in love with the Heurnia Red Dragon Flower she had sent me and then I managed to kill it with over watering this spring! So I am thrilled to have several more starts of it, they came yesterday and I potted them up last night!! I laid the longest piece of it sideways after reading that it will root that way. I'm hoping for lots of new shoots!

It is so much fun trading plants or cuttings or whatever!!!!!!!!!

That is a nice plant Brenda. How long before it will bloom do you have any idea?
I like the bloom on the BP because it is sorta a greenish yellow.

Hello Everyone,

I JUST learned (today in fact) that what I THOUGHT was Black Pagoda was actually the species plant called Aeschynanthus longicaulis.
Lin, if I remember right, our 2 looked pretty close to the same.
Exotic Angel sometimes mislabels their plants and mine is an Exotic Angel.
The person who ID'd it for me KNOWS for sure that mine is Aeschynanthus longicaulis so I have updated my records to reflect the correct name.
I just thought I would share the information I received today so that we can all try to keep the names correct as it's VERY important to alot of people. Some people don't care, a plant is a plant etc. but some people really like to keep records and keep the species/hybrids names attached to the right plant.

Here is a GREAT link that shows what the longicaulis flower looks like and there is also a link to the Black Pagoda so we can clearly see the difference in color etc. The foliages are VERY hard to tell apart as longicaulis was a parent in the cross for Black Pagoda.

OK, I'm all done being a scientist for today *lol*

I certainly wouldn't know, Kim.........here is what I think is a black pagoda from Nan last summer.

Diane I was wanting to know the same thing, when will the Dragon Flower bloom! ^_^ From what I've read I'm gathering it needs to be well rooted and fill it's pot. Several mentioned it blooming within a year of starting theirs from cuttings, I hope so!!

Well Kim, since I bought my (supposed) Black Pagoda from HD and it definitely blooms the colors Makshi is mentioning, the greenish blooms with a bit of orange to them (and as pictured in the link you provided) then mine must be Aeschynanthus longicaulis too. How very interesting.

Rain had sent me my first cuttings of this and that plant too blooms the greenish blooms with a bit of orange and she mentioned rescuing it from HD....LOL

Lin have you seen the mother plant from Makshi's cuttings bloom? Are they the greenish orange colored blooms???

Kim, what do you think I have? Thanks

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Gail my friend, I would really need to see the blooms. Has it ever bloomed for you? If so, do you have a picture of the blooms?
It's VERY hard to tell because Black Pagoda inherited it's foliage from longicaulis and the flower color of speciosus. Without blooms it's quite hard to tell.
Since Black Pagoda is not as readily available I would probably guess you also have a longicaulis Gail and if you have an Exotic Angel plant, then you do.
Exotic Angel named them all Black Pagoda but indeed it was the wrong ID so now there are hundreds of these plants in circulation that are incorrectly named.
I sent my friend a picture of mine as he's been looking for Black Pagoda and he said mine is definitely longicauilis which he has 2 baskets of which he received as Black Pagoda :( SO, needless to say my longicaulis quickly got a name change *lol*

Hope this helps.

It hasn't bloomed yet so I will have to wait and see. I don't know where Nan got it before she sent it to me.

Mine looks just like this when it bloomed.

Hi Ladies! Both of the baskets of Aeschynanthus are Exotic Angel and both were labeled Black Pagoda. My plants have both bloomed and the blooms were nothing to write home about ... very nondescript and didn't do a thing for me! They were kinda a greenish yellow color. I saw absolutely no orange at all.

Aeschynanthus 'Black Pagoda': http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53424/ (someone named Uladech uploaded a close up pic of a bloom that is really pretty, has a lot of orange in it ... my blooms did not look anything like this.

Aeschynanthus 'longicaulis': http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/77824/ the flowers on mine looked closer to threegardeners photo here but I sure don't remember any orange on them ... could be that since they were so drab I really didn't pay close attention to them!

So, I guess everyone who got this plant in trade from me ... it is more likely the A. longicaulis!

Thanks so much Kim for taking the time to give us all the information on these two plants! I agree ... I want the correct ID on my plants!

Oh, I forgot to say:

Makshi - glad you like the Lipstick Plant. I remembered sometime in the winter when we were all discussing it, that you said you would love to have some! Hope it does well for you! I think I took a picture of the flowers when it was blooming the last time ... will go search through my photo files and see if I can find it!

Brenda, the Huernia schneideriana "Red Dragon Flower": http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/61056/ gets little maroon/burgundy colored flowers and it usually blooms for me during the summer if I remember correctly. My plant stays out on the wood deck year round and there are so many plants out there that I don't pay a whole lot of attention to it. I will try to watch it over the next few months to see if I can catch it in bloom!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

The plant Nan sent me looks exactly like the foliage for Black Pagoda I am still thinking.........looked at the sites Lin showed us.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

side the side, the leaves can be distinguished, but yes, the flowers are the best way to tell the difference. I don't think I saw a link to the Black Pagoda photo on gesneriads.ca - http://www.gesneriads.ca/aeschy05.htm

The "orange" tint in the longicaulis flower is more like a browish tinge. (In other words, the flower isn't all greenish.)

I have a different clone of longicaulis that has sturdier thicker leaves. Personally, I love this plant. (I need to repot 2 years ago. Maybe this weekend.)

Your plant with it's shorter rounder leaves is very nice Keyring! Loved the shot of the purple pollen, you have an awesome camera along with a great photographic ability....

Between the different pictures posted I can say that my plant is definitely Aeschynanthus longicaulis and that I love it for it's foliage more than it's blooms .......... but the greenish blooms with some orange are unique!
