black-eyed susan vine

South Rockwood, MI(Zone 5b)

I've been seeing these black-eyed susan vines at all the local greenhouses (not what us Michiganders call a black-eyed susan). Of course I bought one in a hanging basket. They come in orange and yellow. My question is...... has anyone else ever purchased one, and if so, how did it do?

I used to grow those almost every year but haven't in a while now. They are an annual here. They grow very fast and are prolific bloomers and will put on a show all summer long.

You can order seeds for these and start them yourself very easily in early spring indoors. They like full sun and a good drink every day if you are leaving it in the basket. I'd add some weak fertilizer at least once a week.

Enjoy.

I have some seeds for those and they are called thumbalina on the seed package or at least on my package. Hope that helps a bit : )

It's also called Thunbergia. They can get 10-12 feet high and grow quickly. I don't think they get as invasive as Morning Glories can. They are very pretty.

Hi Julie
Is there a trick to getting them to climb? I started them at the base of my birdhouses expecting them to climb the wood but they just sat there. I have more this year but have planted them out yet. Helen

Well You will have to start them or they will go where ever!! But they like alot of heat and will put on quite a show at 80+ degrees!! They go crazy up and out!! That is the biggest secret. They will sit at cooler temps. i am putting mine in my hoop house until the mid. 70's are more dependable. Then i'll bring them out!!
They will be bigger this way!

Thanks Julie - I just put mine in the garage today. I'll take your advice and train them on to something when I plant them out. Helen

I think I'm going to go get some of the orange ones and try to get them to climb my flag pole. Thanks for the help

I looked last night and finally one is climbing. I trimmed deer fencing and wrapped in part way around the posts. I had to 'feed' the vine through the holes and even then it is reluctant to climb. Helen

Oh how right you are. But with the heat just starting to really come ON this plant will grow now in leaps and bounds!!
My 6 are doing real well but a bit slower this year because it's been cooler than normal!

I am growing two colors here in nebraska and they are doing great. i have yellow and a rosey shade called spanish eyes. The flowers to those are tiny compared to the yellow but so pretty. They even did well with our extended cool spring early summer. They yellow was the first to bloom.
