Custom soil mix?

Ames, IA

Hello everyone!
I planted some Brugmansia seeds for the first time this spring, and the good news is that at least one of each variety has germinated! My problem is that I have no idea how to grow them on! Some of them have two true leaves and I'd like to transplant them. I was wondering if someone can recommend a custom soil blend for these little plants? I have peat, vermiculite, and perlite readily on hand.

I prefer to go all organic with these, but from what I read they seem to be heavy feeders; I'm guessing that fish emulsion isn't going to cut it. What NPK values should I be looking for? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

:o) thanks for asking Allison... I too have new seedlings and some rooted cuttings headed my way. I'm also new to brugs. I was just going to post the same question but you beat me to it:o) so I will be watching this thread to see what is recommended.
Hopefully someone answers soon as my rooted cuttings will be here on Wed. :o)

I move my seedlings and cuttings up to regular potting soil with some Osmocote fertlizer added. I just move the pots up to the next size, so that they don't stay too wet for too long.

Thanks for the reply jerodsmom, but I need some clarification: what is "regular potting soil"? LOL I know this may be an odd question... Do you mean that you buy a bag at the store that says "potting soil"? I see that the major ingredients in these are peat, perlite, and vermiculite, and they are much more expensive that just mixing up my own. The soil from my yard/garden is pretty much useless; it is almost pure sand (apparently a river used to flow here).

AnjL- good luck! I hope we all survive, plants and all!

I've used Miracle Grow potting soil as is, not the moisture retention one, without any ill effects, but first I remove the large non-composted chunks of wood.

I use MG potting soil too.. I ad a bag or two of perlite and some steer manure, and some compost to mine. Last year I used GreenSand too... I had good results. Not a "scientific" recipe here.. but what ever I had to add I will.

:o) you just use regular MG potting soil right? not the stuff for shrubs/trees?
