Has anyone ever used Dyna Grow products for hoyas? http://www.dyna-gro.com/
Dyna Gro
HI.... I have used it and I liked it!!! I only switched to MSU because I wanted the added calcium for root growth.
Thanks, Carol! I can't decide what to use....
Well...having experienced both, I like the MSU. And, in the end, it is less expensive. It was created by scientists/growers specifically for artificial potting mediums. But that is just my opinion ....^_^
I have used the regular Dyna Grow 7-9-5, I bought it for African Violets and Gesneriads and ended up using it on everything. I also use Eleanor's VF-11 on everything. I've been known to use orchid bloom booster for a lot of flowering plants too.
I do plan on ordering some of the MSU Fertilizer ... have heard so many wonderful things about it and just keep forgetting to place an order.
I just ordered some Dyna-Gro and Maxicrop soluble seaweed powder. Has anyone used seaweed for their hoyas?
I like the dynagrow, its a good, balanced fertilizer.
I've used maxicrop too, it seems to perk the plants up. It smells interesting, like the sea sort of, but it can be a bit strong if you don't have good ventilation.
I have used seaweed fert. but made the mistake of thinking it was a complete fert. It is not. I am not a chemist and don't have time to figure it out....so I stopped!!!!
OK, where do you guys get this stuff? Inquiring minds are inquiring.
Try www.firstrays.com That's where i buy mine. I buy a 5# tub and Ray can fit it in a Fixed Rate USPS box.... He is a super guy. The fert. is listed under Chemicals.....
If you (anyone out there with MSU fert) have a tub of the MSU floating around or just happen to know off the top of your head... does it contain nitrogen from urea? I can't seem to find this info anywhere.
Sorry to jack the Dyna-Gro thread :)
Oooooo.. good question MM. I use orchid fertilizer on my Hoya because it doesn't use urea as a nitrogen source.
Barb
MM - why don't you write to Ray and ask him... I have some tubs but no labels. There is a site of the University where they talk about it....
Think I found it...
Nitrate Nitrogen 12.5%, Ammoniacal Nitrogen 0.7%
I read through the PDF's located here on the right hand side of the page about mid way down.
http://www.repotme.com/orchid-fertilizer/Orchid-Fertilizer.html
Urea is a common source of nitrogen, it is a ring of ammonias linked together which is less toxic than the ammonia itself. The urea cannot be directly used by plants, and it is broken down my bacteria in the soil to ammonia then nitrate, which can be used by plants.
I'm not sure what the source issue is all about, but if you got ammonia or urea, you are sure to have nitrate in a short while.
So I went out today and got Dyna-Gro Bloom and Grow in their smallest bottles. I tried to be true to using 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of Bloom on my plants that were both healing, and with plants that are in season to bloom. I just used Grow on those that I thought were needing a little help with growing, and not blooming now.
Now, at the lower amounts of DynaGro, do you guys use it in all the water all the time. And exactly how is it that you guys need it by the gallon? I think the pints I got will last a long time....
AnalogDog, I use the Dynagrow and the MSU at half the recommended ratio, sometimes after watering, sometimes just pure fertilizer water (if I am feeling lazy and don't want to lug any pots outside, so they can get soaked first and then fertilized). Pretty much at every watering, though occasionaly I will skip a week or two, especially in the winter.
I haven't heard any complaints from the Hoya.
I don't recall what the ratio for Dynagrow is, but for the MSU pure water formula the recommended ration is 2/3 tsp/gallon for 100ppm. I use 1/3tsp for 50 ppm, at this low dosage it seems to have been safe for constant use.
Finally! I've been meaning to do this for months. Went to firstray and ordered the MSU. I love my hoyas and I'm sure they'll love me back with some good fertilizer.
