I just picked up this plant from the nursery on Saturday and found this little hitchhiker today. The plant is some type of Jasmine (it says arboricola trinette on the container).
Can anyone ID this thing? I've done many searches on the internet, looking at pix ... but have not yet been able to ID it. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.
Can anyone ID this chrysalis/larvae?
Oh, how odd. You have one of the sulphur butterflies there. Were those plants sitting next to cassias or sennas by any chance? Sometimes the caterpillars will wander off to a nearby plant instead of staying on the host. I guess they decided your plant was just comfier! I always love getting freebies with my plants. It's hard to say which sulfur you've got there. Look for it to turn bright yellow or orange before it comes out and let us know when it does!

Melanie,
Thank you so much!!! I am so excited!
I have no idea what this plant was next to at the nursery - and frankly - don't care. Just glad that I got a bonus gift!!!
The same day I got this plant, I got a duranta dew drop. And, guess what... that one had a chrysalis too! I was able to ID it as a Gulf Fritillary - which emerged yesterday!
I just started this gardening, butterfly thing a few months ago and I am just LOVING it.
Again, thanks for your ID - I post a pic when it emerges (if I'm around to witness it).
Oh, which reminds me - one more question... How long can I expect the butterfly to stay put after they emerge? My Gulf Fritillary was gone within an hour and a half.
Gulf Frits tend to be pretty quick, but an hour and a half to two hours sounds about right. You should be able to tell the day before it comes out - you can really see the wings through the chrysalis. Welcome to the obsession and don't be shy! There's lots of great folks in this forum.
Melanie
