My Florist Gloxinia

Grantsville, UT(Zone 5a)

I won this Florist Gloxinia beauty last week and our church Mother/Daughter Banquet. Until yesterday I didn't know the name of this plant. It is huge, vibrant and has 18 blooms and buds on it. I'm not sure how to care for it but I do know it will die off and rebloom. It sits on my bathroom counter and above it is a skylight which seems to be giving it enough light. The bathroom is cool and night as in no heat so it is a bit chilly until morning. Any suggestions on her care appreciated.

what a beauty, lucky you. lol After they are finished blooming you are suppose to water the plant less until it dies back, but it does grow from a tuber & does rest, so put it somewhere where it's dark to rest & eventually you will see new growth & then you start watering again to start all over again. alot like regular sinningia's.

How beautiful! I just learned something new from mrsbonnie. I never dreamed you could regrow the tuber from a florist's gloxinia.

Dark as in a closet or just a less lit room?

My Gloxinias are in bud - I have several colors, and they are several years old - beautiful plants, and so easy to grow!

Kay, then please tell us what exactly you do when they go dormant. Thanks

I never realized these plants had a resting period until a few years ago when I had a beautiful purple flowering Gloxinia ... probably bought at Wal-Mart - I had it sitting on a plant stand and I always thought they just bloomed awhile and then died. I had forgotten all about it and had a pot sitting on the stand for awhile, empty. I figured the plant had died and all of a sudden saw a little green sprout ... had no idea what it was because the pot had no label on it ... I watched it grow and bloom again into that beautiful purple Glox. Now, I think I might have dumped it. Need to check to see if I have any pots of soil sitting on a stand somewhere.
