Hi everyone! I thought I would share this story with you all... It will teach a lesson that I had to teach to my 10 year old very quickly about Mother Nature..
We raise Luna Moths, I bought a few and they stayed in the fridge all winter. We checked them and took good care of them. We took them out a few weeks ago and checked on them everyday, my daughter was so excited to just see one up close that she could wait to see them hatch. Well one was ready and out she popped-a girl! We were very excited because we had a cage outside to see if any males would come and mate with her and then we would have eggs to raise from caterpillars. We put her outside in the cage but Mom(me) forgot to close the door and she got out. We watch as she sailed across the yard, so beautiful and graceful. As she went to reach the tree a huge bird came and grabbed her and sailed away with the Luna moth in its mouth. We just stood there frozen-I didn't know what to say at first...I waited for the tears to come. She looked at me(my daughter) and I said um, that would be what we call the food chain, it happens sometimes. The bird will more than likely be feeding little ones in a nest..Mother Nature at work...
If there was a camera on us and it caught out faces though, I imagine it would have been quite funny to see...What can you do? Nature will win everytime!

Oh that's so disappointing for a little one (and you too of course)! I had something similar happen to me when I brought a newly hatched butterfly outside, so I know the feeling.
