It does look like a space cartoon from bugs bunny.....If I remember correctly. Its been looking like that for 3 days....I'm beginning to worry.

Its been hot...almost 90 degrees and no rain in almost 3 weeks. Good thing I got the misting system set up.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

WOW How pretty! I hope it opens soon.

Yes, it sure looks like a space cartoon from bugs bunny.

Here is very hot too, today 94 and also very humid...

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Ric, it's a hoya smiley frownie ^_^ !!!!! So cute!

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lourdes,
94 and hummid...you need to take advantage of that and get your hoyas outside. I had a small greenhouse but it did not work here in florida....it got to hot!!! A shade house is the way to go here. On those rare days that the temps drop into the thirties, I just cover the structure with a plastic tarp.

Can't wait for the flower to open....but its still a frownie. "(

Hi Ric,

I already talked to my husband about trying to build a shade house. I just had one question: Since I have no big trees, would the roof of the shade house be enough to protect the plants from the sun? Here in Texas we have highs of upper 90's to low 100's for most of June, July, and August and I'm worried that the roof alone wouldn't provide enough shade.

Thanks again,

Lourdes

Oh, that is too cute! Can't wait for that one to smile for the camera!

It has been 94 degrees here the past two days but at least it's been breezy which helps. We were in Orlando for the better part of the day yesterday ... 95 over there and no breeze - very hot! We sure could use some rain here ... we are way below normal rainfall. Haven't had any decent rain in a couple of months. Some are saying we need a good Tropical Storm to dump a lot of rain on us. Hurricane season is just a few weeks away ... sure don't want any damaging storms but it would be nice to get a lot of much needed rain.

Ric, where did you get your misting system? That sounds like something I would like to have for my back deck where I have so many plants ... I'm sure they would love it with all this heat and dry weather we are having. It seems like I take the hose and water everything but with the heat and wind everything is drying out very quickly!

Lourdes....if you build a 'hoop' type structure, you could have the shade cloth on the sides too. I will take some photos today of my shade house...it was easy to build (for my DH) and it went up quickly!!! Ric...maybe some photos of yours? Or others who have them? Even a lean-to attached to the house would work....but you want to make sure you have air circulation!!!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Thank you so much Carol, I'll do my homework.
I would really appreciate photos to get a better idea.

Thank you all very much!

Thanks Barb. It looks like dark chocolate.

Lourdes....my shade house is a make shift structure with a bamboo roof ( the kind you buy at home depot it comes in rolls of 6 ft by 16 ft i think) Its tucked in the back corner of the yard. Here is a pic of the structure.

Lin, I got the misting system at Lowes......its in the irragation isle. I think its called Mr. Mister

Wow! So different than I thought it would look after seeing that frown in your first photo! Very cool looking flower! I like that star shape!

Great Shade House! And, thanks for the info for the misting system. I am going to check it out when we head up to Lowes in the next day or two! That would be a wonderful thing to have on my deck ... I know the plants would love it, especially in this dry heat wave we are having and high winds!

We sure need some rain. Any fires burning over your way? There are a couple over here on the east coast ... some folks were evacuated from their homes this evening because of a brush fire in Daytona ... about 5 miles from here.
I-95 is closed both Northbound and Southbound down in the Cocoa area ... and parts of U.S. highway 1 because of two fires burning in Brevard County. We have had some very high winds all day today which sure doesn't help the firefighters trying to control these fires!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

My son Andrew just got home from visiting us and he had to go, what we call the back way to get onto I-95 south to Ft. Lauderdale. I-95 was closed from Palm Bay to Vero Beach. He went down Babcock and then thru Fellsmers to US1 then south past Vero and finally got onto I-95 further south. I thought that he, Lyn and Anthony would have to turn back and spend the night with us. Some of the roads locally here were closed because of fires all around us. Anyway, they arrived home safe. They are saying that the fires are suspicious.

(Zone 1)

Imadigger: I'm glad your son and his family got to the interstate and on their way home safely! And, I hope you and the rest of your family are safe. It's unfortunate but most of the brush fires seem to be arson related. I know that lightning starts some fires here in the state but a lot of them are criminally set on purpose. I will never understand the mentality of people who do such a thing. I remember the wild fires here in our area in 1998 and it was very scary! Many homes were lost in those fires.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Lyn, you have some major fires burning in Daytona too. It's on the news right now. The winds are not helping the firemen to put them out. Well, my kids are home safe, and I'm pooped after a busy day.I'm heading for bed. Goodnight all! ^_^

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Wow! Ric, nice flower!
Imadigger, glad your son & family made home safely.
Lin, hope the fire your way is under control.

Shepherdstown, WV

Oh, those fires sound awful! Glad to hear your son and his family are well. The weather all over the country is just dreadful!

Ric - GREAT flower! Very cool!

Ric,
Congratulations on the flower, it's so beautiful!!!!

Thank you for the picture of the shade house,

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lin...no fires or smoke. I'm surprised cause its been so dry and hot the last couple of weeks. Last year was awful. The smoke filled the air for days. Hope your area has cleared up.
Thanks for all the kind words on the hoya.....I'm really happy with it. I think I just figured out how to bloom erostemmas.

Shepherdstown, WV

Do share your secret, Ric!

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Kelly......I don't think this is a new. But I think this is what needs to happen for it to bloom.
a) the plant has to get large and allowed to climb. b) get plenty of sun and c) I added a tablespoon of limestone to the pots a few months ago.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Ric...you got it!!! Dolomite is even MORE available to the plants.... It is the CLIMBING, LIGHT combination...they love it...some even take a lot of full sun!!!!!

Shepherdstown, WV

Thanks, Ric! I have 2 erostemmas so that's helpful! As soon as possible I'll be moving them outdoors and putting them on trellises!
