I happened to see this Tiny little guy, Just before I stepped on him.
Is it a hummingbird moth?
Hummingbird Moth?
It looks like a kind of Clearwing moth, but the proboscis isn't right. How big was it?
Tiny, It would fit on a thumb nail, it seemed to be "learning to fly" it would fly a few inchees and land fly and land.
My hummingbird moths are larger than that -- and it is a little early for them, I think.

It was probably a Bee Fly. There are alot that mimic bees. thwoods is right there- the hummingbird moths are big, sometimes as big as a thumb. And they hover like hummingbirds- your bug sounds like it was moving more like a fly.
Also, flies have two wings, and moths have four. Looks like your bug had two.
Scroll down on this link-the coloring isn't the same, but the Bee Fly looks like your guy.
