I was looking in my closet today and realized I had a problem when I saw my clothes racks as great hoya shelving. I had to stop and go out and meet with friends or my clothes would be in piles.
I have a plant addiction problem.
LOL! I think a few of us can relate, although I haven't heard of anyone actually stealing their clothes racks for plants!
This past winter I had my husband hang two iron plant hanger brackets in the guest room (east window) and I found an old wooden closet pole in the garage from when he re-did our closet years ago. I hung the wooden rod across the brackets and whaa laa ... a great place for plants! It worked great for hanging my orchids when it was too cold outside!
Wow! Beautiful Garden!
Great Growing! Looks like you have your very own botanical garden right in your backyard! Love it! Does it ever get cold enough that you have to move plants inside in the winter?
It's been years since I've been in St. Pete. My aunt and uncle and my husbands aunt and uncle lived there for many, many years. My mother was there for about fifteen years too. I know it doesn't get as cold over there as it does here on the east coast. I have a lot of plants and some stay out on my deck year round but I do have to cover them with old blankets at times. We do get frost over here and have had a hard freeze a few times over the years. It would be wonderful not to have to worry about moving plants in and out during the winter!
Ric I personally don't see it as a problem:-). With all of those plants you could actually walk around in your bithday suit and no one would be able to see you!
Blessings,
Awanda
LOLOL- Great point Awanda!!!
Ric...You tell US this is a problem? You are preaching to the choir.....LOL. I have now started collecting Tillansias....gardenias and.....more hoyas. Will it never end?
My addictions are Philodendrons, Hoyas, the orchid cactus types: Epiphyllums,Schlums, Rhipsalis, Orchids and now African Violets and the whole Gesneriad family......yeah.....you're definitely amoung friends
edited because I left out Orchids- How could I leave off a collection of 40-50 Orchids???

Awanda.....you are too funny. I'm considering putting a jacuzzi some where back there. So that is a possibility.
Plantlady.......in the last 8 years, the temps have gone down into the lower 30's for a few hours at night ...maybe 3 times. Most hoyas have made it. Imperialis is the only one that will die for sure.
Besides hoyas and orchids. I've discovered Huernias and the more unusual aloes and heliconias. I just got 4 plants on ebay.
Hi all,
Ric, don’t worry, you are not alone. (LOL)
The more species I see, the more I want, and it’s a never-ending story.
Enjoy them!!!
I'm moving in less than 3 weeks. I was forced to pare down to a bare 117 hoyas, 1 pony tail palm and 1 norfolk island pine by the time we listed for sale. The stager still wasn't happy with the "houseplant situation" but we sold quickly enough anyway. I mean who could not look at a stand (okay, 5) with 20-30 healthy hoyas on it and not think it was a beautiful addition to a home?! So, while my addictions include other plants, hoyas had to take top drawer during the sale process. A few (hibiscuses and a duranta) I fostered out and have back now. The rest (40+) have new homes, and once we move I'll be collecting cuttings of pretty much anything, including hoyas - well, okay, I've already started with the hoyas...I have about 25 coming within the month...lol...
Christine
Ric- your terminology is flawed. It is either a "situation" or a "fact", not a "problem"!
Christine, don't pay any mind to stagers, or as we call them in the gardening biz "fluffers". When did they come onto the scene anyway?
I'm only 40, but check out this bit of granpaitis:
Back in the day, when people went to look at prospective homes, the houses were empty and you had to use your IMAGINATION to picture how your own stuff would look in it. What happened to imagination? Oh yeah, you can't bill for it!
Mark,
I think its a fact that my situation is a problem to some, and, I at times think that as well. But I love it!! And I'm glad to have such support.

Ric: Collecting plants is only a problem with those who don't understand. Many of us Love the "problem" of being addicted to plants! We stick together and enable each other to have more, more, more!
We have been in our house for 35 years and I have had a lot of plants over the years but began acquiring many more when I quit working 15 years ago! I have a little bit of everything from African Violets to the ZZ plant! I have this Huernia: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/61056/ that I've had for years and never even knew what it was until someone on DG gave me the ID for it. I always called it a peanut cactus because that is what it was labeled when I got it years ago. Ok, come on, tell us what 3 plants you just got from e-bay!
Diane: Sounds like we have the same likes in plants! I love Philo's too. Have a couple, nothing rare or anything. And, I have a few Epiphyllum that I've gotten in trades ... can't wait to see the blooms. I have a few Rhip's too ... a couple that I've had a long time. I guess the only plants I really don't like are cactus with thorns! I swore I would never have a thorny plant again ... and then I can't resist buying a couple of Bougainvillea's - now those things have some huge thorns when they mature, but they are so pretty when in bloom!
Ceedub: Wow ... 117 hoya's and that's paring down? That number sounds wonderful to me! I just need a very, very huge house with a huge room with a glass roof, lots of floor to ceiling windows, a tile floor with a drain for water, oh and a hose hookup! Hmm, sounds like I need a greenhouse! A big one!
LOL Mark ... I'm 60 and recall many years ago looking at prospective homes both empty and with other people's furnishings, collections and sometimes junk ... don't remember any plants though! I've told my husband if I die before he does he is to donate all of my plants to a botanical garden! I think he was very relieved about that since he loves the plants but hasn't a clue or the time to take care of them. If he ever retires (hopefully in the next 6 years I will be downsizing and giving many, many plants away! The plan right now is to sell the house, buy a small townhouse and a large boat to travel the waterways for awhile! I will have to a plant or three on board, but everything else will have to go unless of course I could find someone to visit the townhouse and check on the plants once in awhile!
Ok ... back to work! We have been laying sod in the front yard! In 94 degree heat! We should have dug up the crab grass and done this last month!
Have a great "Happy Hoya" weekend everyone!
My plant addiction extends to yard plants as well - hostas, flowering shrubs, anything with lime/light green or variegated foliage.
Inside it's mostly just the hoyas; however, having just had my one and only orchid rebloom I've been obsessing with orchids on eBay. Some how I've avoided actually bidding on one yet mostly because I just can't make up my mind.... Today I bought a planter because I couldn't identify one of the plants in it. The leaves on this plant have bright green spots on them which is what attracted me...thinking it may be a begonia. Did I really need to buy it just so I could identify it? Seriously, I don't have quite that much discretionary income....but as I think someone else said if you're going to have an addiction this is certainly the lesser of some of the evils!
LOL kelly! SO glad I'm not the only one!
Yep, Lin, I love the Philos.! They have been suffering neglect lately with my new Gessie fascination though. I couldn't give up my plants to travel. I think we'd just have to buy an extra RV or someting to take them with me. Or maybe it'd have to be a semi truck.....
