In Wichita Falls, alkaline soils, what can I do for my hydrangeas?
Hydrangeas in North Texas alkaline soil.
Hydrangeas will grow well in alkaline soil. Its blooms will be pink if you are asking about the mophead hydrangeas, Hydrangea macrophylla. They do like rich moist soil with plenty of organic matter. Most mopheads bloom on old wood, wood produced the previous year. Heavy pruning will reduce the flower production. It is best to prune after they bloom. A hard freeze will kill the buds so mulching is advised. There are a few new cultivars that bloom on both old and new wood. So if the old wood buds are killed by frost, you will get flowers forming on new growth.
