Monarda Citriodora LEMON MINT

Bryan, TX(Zone 8b)

Good grief!! I was driving out to my sister's last night and kept thinking the pasture on the side of the highway looked familiar. I left her house and it kept nagging me until I finally pulled over on Highway 21 East. Right there, on the side of the highway is MILES of Monarda Citriodora blooming like mad. The plants pull up easily out of the soil but transplanting doesn't make much sense, there are literally thousands!!! If anyone can tell me when and how to collect the seeds, I'll get a gazillion for anyone that wants them.

Monarda citriodora is an annual but it sure is pretty, pick the seed as the plant starts to dry, and be careful not to let them fall out, they are a pain to take out of the little capsule.

I have had good luck with mine. I bought the seeds at Wildseed Farms in Fredricksburg about 4 years ago. I have had the same plant come back every year. It is just beautiful!

I just seeded some this year. How long is is their bloom period?

Are all Monarda annuals? I bought a bunch of Marshall's Delight monarda thinking they were perennial. Silly me for not checking first!! Almost everything I have is for xeriscaping, I just bought monarda to put near my roses for bees.

There are 27 Monardas native to Texas, some are annual, some biennial and some perennial. I don't know about the non natives.

Wild Bergamot, is a perennial....it comes back every year.
