How warm should a heat mat be?

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Hi all. I'm visiting my sis in Oregon and she is trying to start some cuttings I gave her from the co-op. She has a Jiffy heat mat that says it gets to 70 degrees. Is this really warm enough for the cuttings or should we look for another way? It feels slightly warm to the touch and is made for starting seeds. Just want to be sure - I'm used to putting mine on cement blocks at home.

Hey Kathleen, It is best to be above 80, but 70 is better than nothing.

Hey - I used a seed starting mat on a couple of cuttings, prob the same one - just warm to the touch. They've been sitting on them for two months - and whoohooo, they are bursting to life!

Don't set the heat mat directly on a table, or it will act like a "heat sink" and draw all the heat away from the seedlings. You need to set the heat mat on styrofoam or some other insulated base. They should tell you that on the package but they don't!
